Premium Review Best group ever from Birmingham? (276 words)

Rating:

which surprises me, as it is one of the groups most enduring albums and certainly one which spurned many hits in the early nineties. Who are they: UB40 are from Birmingham and specialise in reggae tinged pop music, they began with more politically motivated songs before becoming more mainstream with their content. Highlights: The big one one on here is I Can t Help Falling In Love which is brought up to date and given a whole new sound. The reggae beat really keeps it fresh, while the vocals swirl around the song like a fine mist. Campbell breathes life into the lyrics and effortlessly delivers the words, sincerely and with touching emotion. If you re after ...

Rating:

Brummie group UB40 released Promises and Lies back in 1993 on the Virgin Records label. It is now the only album of theirs that I have, unfortunately having lent the excellent Labour of Love volumes 1 and 2 to someone and never getting it back. (This problem is vastly exacerbated due to me forgetting who I’d lent them to, so I can’t ever ask for them back!… Listen kids, keep a record of who you lend your stuff to. Trust me on this…) Er… anyway, this isn’t a bad album, but I’m really gutted to have lost the superior album and kept this. Still never mind, I can review this one… There are a couple of really great songs on Promises and Lies, on their own possibly worth ...

If you re a regular reader of my reviews you might have guessed that I ve been going through my old record collection lately! After a previous review of UB40 s debut album Signing Off I thought I d take a look at their second offering Present Arms . After the huge critical and chart success of ‘Signing Off’ multiracial ‘Brummie’ Reggae outfit UB40 had a difficult task in producing a worthy second album. Coming from a an area of the country that had been decimated by unemployment and racial unrest caused or at least made worse by Tory government policy UB40 taking their name from the then unemployment form clearly nailed their political colours to the mast. ‘Signing ...

Innovative, thought provoking, and exciting. The band are no longer together so this is the newest material we'll ever hear from them.

Eden - Everything But The Girl
Good songs, good lyrics Some songs are very short

Dusk And Summer - Dashboard Confessional
Great music to kick back and relax to Most of the tracks here are fairly forgettable

Blackout - Britney Spears
Consistent, polished dance/pop Weak vocals and uninspired subject matter

Alienigma - Agent Steel
Some more repetitive groove metal tracks if you really needed them. Old men have lost their way and try to get back in touch; the result is merely competent.
