Advantages: Different, Lots of tracks, Lots of variety
Disadvantages: quite an unknown band, may not suit some peoples tastes
Lamb is a little known gem in the world of alternative music groups. The best way to describe their music would be to compare them to the likes of such groups as massive attack, though they aren’t as deep and Moody as that. The first thing I’d like to mention is that the group consists of 2 people, none of that modern pop group stuff with 4 or 5 members. It simply consists of one bloke who does the music, and one lady who does the vocals. The music is quite trippy and ambient, and varies greatly from track to track and album to album. The vocals are beautiful. I have to say this, though it isn’t intended as an insult. The vocals are a little cold/wintry, slightly like catatonia, but a lot more smooth and calming. The best example of which is track 9, Gorecki, which is by far the best track on the whole of Lambs debut album. This album I feel needs the listener to listen to it several times to get the most out of it. I bought it, listened to it once, and hated it, but now it’s one of my favourite albums. And if you want to know why I bought it, it’s because I had heard the track Gorecki elsewhere, and decided to see what the rest of the groups’ music was like. I’ll try to add a very brief description of each track found on the album below, but please note the VERY! ~~LUSTY~~ The first thing that comes to mind when you listen to this track is the background instrumental bells. I can’t help but feel it has an Oriental atmosphere to it. Mixed in with the track are some very deep bass and some nice vocals. ~~GOD BLESS~~ This track once you have listened to it a few times, will have you singing “Let me breath it into you” in the back of your head repeatedly for days. Yes, it’s one of those songs which you can’t get out of your head. It’s a bit like lusty, without the oriental atmosphere and bass that is half as deep. ~~COTTO
N WOOL~~ The beginning of this track sounds like a record skipping over and over. This track is quite modern-ish, and the tone is quite low/deep. Listening to it I can’t help but feel that it does actually sound like a record skipping, as the music doesn’t flow from one rhythm to another, but is quite jagged, which is quite different! ~~TRANS FATTY ACID~~ This track reminds me of a “Gorillaz” album. There aren’t as many vocals in it, and it is even more low/deep than Cotton wool. ~~ZERO~~ This tracks quite light, with some good string instrumentals thrown in for good measure. I’d have to say in this track the instrumentals compliment the vocals, which is opposite than the trend where the vocals are a little drowned out by the music and rhythm. ~~MERGE~~ This track sounds quite like Cotton Wool, this time parts of the track reminds me of trains passing telephone lines, strange I know! Strangely enough there aren’t any vocals in it! It’s completely instrumental. ~~GOLD~~ This is quite a mellow track, and quite jazzy at that, with what I guess is a cello or something in the background? ~~CLOSER~~ This is quite a calm track, and is medium-fast paced. ~~GORECKI~~ This has got to be the best track on the whole album. I love it, and lots of others who I have made listen to it love it. It’s quite quiet to start off with, with some piano in the background, and the vocals being the dominating part of the music. Then gradually more instruments are added, some bongo type drums, and then others. A little while later, the track gets into full swing with full instruments and picks up the pace a bit. Then, after a little while the track switches back to just vocals, and then back again and then back to vocals and a few instruments where it dies out. This track is very mellow and calming, with excellent lyrics added to it about love, and everything
leading to the one moment of finding true love. Excellent. ~~FEELA~~ This track I have to say makes me think it is slightly like Gorecki, but obviously it is different. It’s a lot more quiet, and slightly slower than most other tracks, which lets you listen to the lyrics, which I feel bring you back down to earth after listening to Gorecki. ~~FEELA PART2, OR HIDDEN TRACK?~~ I always rip my CD’s into mp3 format so I can listen to them on my PC, and make copies in case my original is ruined. I in no way condone the practise of sharing music with programs like napster, as this takes the money the bands like Lamb well nigh deserve, though I couldn’t agree more with fighting their labels to get the bands a better profit. Anyway, when I ripped my CD, I found that Feela was 17 minutes long. It pauses and is silent for about 1 minute 5-6 minutes in, and then a slightly similar track fades in. This one has more instruments and is noticeably faster paced than feela. I feel it has aspects of some of the other tracks in the album in it as well; it’s quite nice to listen to! I hope that this review has helped portray what I think of Lamb, as I think anyone who is interested in music other than the popular teeny-bopper pop music; this is well worth a listen to! MC Quirkafleeg - 15/07/03 I have the Chilled Ibiza series, and the track Gorecki is the highlight of one of the CDs. I was just hunting through the highly rated dance albums, and stumbled across this one. I need more calming chilled music for my collection, to balance out my large techno and hard house collection.
A great review, nicely written.. thanks!
