Hammerfall's second album is structurally, ideologically and sonically identical to its predecessor, but is slightly less impressive for failing to be as much fun. Continuing with an irrational lyrical preoccupation with hammers that's comparable to Ronnie James Dio's obsession with rainbows, this is by-the-numbers power metal that forsakes extraneous elements such as orchestration and keyboard work, but fails to live up to its obvious influences in 1980s heavy metal. 'Heeding the Call' has a good guitar riff and some nice unison vocal work in the chorus that isn't overdone, but the main song sounds weak thanks to the squeaking vocals of Joacim Cans. The ...
