Advantages: all the big hits
Disadvantages: a little pricey
I won't bore you with a life history of him and waffle on about his origins, because that would be patronising, so let's cut straight to the chase. This is a twenty track best of album, collecting pretty much all of Lennon's biggies. Naturally, it begins with the beautiful and haunting 'Imagine.' I can see why this song figures in many people's top tens of all time. It is an original piece of music, touching lyrics and genuine emotion underpinning a song that everyone can tap into at some time in their lives.
'Instant Karma' is much more assertive, successful with the rhythm and benefiting from a keen vocal. You can see where the Gallagher brothers drew inspiration from when you here this song. I also like 'Mother' which begins with some moody bells before unfolding in an unexpectedly restrained fashion. Lennon's vocals are tempered and bluesy and the track moves at a leisurely pace.
As we hit 'Jealous Guy' you will have that 'Oh I recognise this one' thought in your head. You might not be familiar with the title, but it's one of those Lennon songs which always crops up on radio. A lovely piano and subtle vocal carry this one. For something more robust, 'Whatever Gets You Thru the Night' is verging on a hoedown. A brassy start and chirpy vocals, showcasing a very different side to his performance. I can see this being played at carnivals and parties. Positive lyrics and a real sense of spirit boost the morale here.
'Mind Games' is achingly longing with the melody and seems to be nudging you along with gentle prods. His vocal resonates well here, though the song is too bleak for me to want to return to regularly, head instead to the startling 'Woman' which stands up to repeated listening. A warming melody and soothing vocals, showing Lennon's tender side. I adore the backing vocals here too which give the track a thoughtful and enchanting air.
This is a comprehensive best of, with some fine memories, even if you don't like the Beatles, there is enough here to stir emotions.
Summary: great stuff

- 11/11/09 Roxy Music did a good cover of Jealous Guy. I especially like his songs Imagine, Love and God. |
