Probably their best album (Let Go - Nada Surf)
Member Name: liamb71
Advantages: 'The way you wear your head' Disadvantages: 'Blonde on Blonde' I first saw Nada Surf back in 1996 when their first album had just been released, and waited for years for them to make the inevitable breakthrough which I felt they deserved. They had various contractual issues which did not help, and I was beginning to fear the worst for them when they released this album which, whilst not catapulting them into the mainstream, certainly did a lot to help their popularity. The album starts in reflective mood with 'Blizzard of 77', before launching into 'The Way you wear your Head', a much more upbeat, catchy numnber which is my favourite on the album. For me things go seriously downhill with 'Blonde on Blonde' and 'Inside of Love', two dirges in my view, although it would seem from the times that they I have seen them live that they are many peoples' favourites. However 'Hi Speed Soul' lifts the tempo again, and just to prove that I am not totally anti ballads, the beautiful 'Killian's Red' is a real high point of the latter stages of the album. Matthew Caws is a great songwriter, and it is a shame in my view that as he has approached mid life, the albums which have followed this one have become ever more bland and insipid. Unless you are as much of a fan of loud guitars as I am, I would say that this is the best Nada Surf album to start out with, and if you like easy listening, go fowards through their discography. If you prefer a bit more of an edge, then their two releases before this one should certainly meet with your approval. Summary: Certainly worth buying at the right price |
