Advantages: polished
Disadvantages: dreary
I know he is held in high regard, but is it just me who find Mr Will Young just a little bit boring? At the height of X Factor, it was all very exciting and each release was a joy, we didn't care if they were all cover versions, we just bought them and accepted that we had a new star in our midst.
Fast forward a few years and Will has brushed away any last smells of X Factor that might have been lingering, adopted his own musical path and gone all mature and James Morrison on us.
'Changes' is mellow, jazz lounge almost. He sings like he has been doing the song for a million years. Effortless yes, but a dreary old song on the verses until the chorus comes in.
'Grace' is all very elegent and charming, the sort of song you should tip toe around and treat with respect and bow down to. Head next to 'Tell Me The Worst' which finds Will in a reserved frame of mind, softly working his way through a dreamy backing track, some delicious high notes in here, but the tune is not memorable enough to make it have any real impact.
'Disconnected' is not a bad number, with an almost ethereal melody. Young's vocals remain wispy and light and dust the track in a curious magic. It is all very chilled and laidback, I can imagine playing it when I need to unwind. This could have been a lovely Christmas single.
The title song 'Let It Go' is a polished affair, with delicate pianos, hushed vocals and lyrics which showcase Will's ability to tap into the tender mature side he has. There are thirteen tracks in total, yes it is pleasant easy listening and you can see his progression, but you cannot escape the fact that the album is just quite dull. Let's see some powerful numbers, let's see you having some fun like in the good ol' days!
Old before it's time, but polished.
Summary: dreary pop
