Advantages: None, I suppose it only lasts 45 minutes...
Disadvantages: The entire piece, every single thing
Why, oh why, oh why? David you didn't have to do it. Why didn't you stay away forever? This piece of nonsense was an insult to what the man had done before - inferior, bland, pop pap which should have been consigned to the bargain bins before it was released. It sported the three hit singles Let's Dance, China Girl and Modern Love and they're all music by numbers, pop trash which is flimsy and easily (or I wish it could be) forgotten. The album marked Bowie's move from RCA to a whole new world of pop colours with EMI and also a period in the wilderness for him. Grit your teeth and steadfastly ignore this album - it's the worst kind of fare imaginable - rendered all the more seriously depressing by the realisation that it could be created by a guy who was capable of the epic Low and Heroes - it's a criminal waste of talent and must be seen as a sad aberration on Bowie's part. The videos hinted at it, with Let's Dance itself getting the benefit of the doubt, despite its bland happiness, but China Girl with its ripped off version of From Here To Eternity and soft focus shot of Bowie's bum was the keynote - this was meaningless and very, very bland, the sign of a man marking time on his way to middle age. Modern Love thereafter was just an embarrassment as you watched his limbs creaking in that funny suit he wore. After this, Bowie went off well into Nutso City and lost his way completely - it was a total surprise then when he came back so strongly with the excellent, raw stuff he re-emerged with ove rthe last couple of years. When listening to that stuff next to this hideously awful album, you could be forgiven for thinking that this was someone who was trying to do an impression of how Bowie would sound if he was trying to make hit records - you would never have credited it for being the same diamond geezer. I remember when I first heard this album I was
shocked, and then variously in despair, in stitches and up in arms - the man could do better than this or perhaps all old has beens as they start approaching 50 start finally turning bland and losing all credibility they once possessed. Oh well, at least he saw sense in later years, and we can only look back on this embarrassment with some pity. Oh, by the way, I hate this album.
