Lets be honest even us straight women probably would with Kylie after all she is rather sexy and this album saw her return to her disco diva roots resplendant in gold hot pants and butt cheeks to die for.
Light Years is a fun disco album that is made to bop to and is typified by one of the main hits off the album Spinning Around where the gold hotpants get an outing in the video and this bubbly addictive song and the disco theme is continued with songs like Loveboat, So Now Goodbye and the appropriately named Disco Down all of them lively dance tunes which has your feet tapping and you body wiggling about and then striking the odd pose. There is an unashamedly camp quality to some of the music but with her mellow sexy tones the whole thing works really well.
I'm not a big fan of the sickly sweet ballad Kids that she did with Robbie Williams on this album although it does highlight that she has a strong voice when called upon however the song just does not work for me.
On A Night Like This is a good song and I also like Please Stay which has a latin feel to it and again is a good track to have a bop to.
I do like this album although it does have a slightly bubblegum feel to it in that it loses its flavour after a while and is not an album I go back to hardly at all it was just a good one in the moment and worked well at a fun level.
Light Years was the album which flung Kylie Mingue back into the spotlight and back to the top of the UK charts after the commercial flop that was the Destruction era. This album is packed full with each track being a perfect pop song and no filler songs at all. It was released in the UK in September 2000 and has achieved platinum status, and it is easy to see why.
This album saw Kylie Minogue go back to what she does best - great pop music! The album included the singles Spinning Around, On A Night Like This, Please Stay and Kids (a duet with Robbie Williams). Aswell as the singles every other track brings something to the album. A highlight of the album for myself is Your Disco Needs You, which is a pure slice of OTT camp pop.
This album launched the Australian superstar back into the spotlight and she certainly deserved to stay there with her great pure pop music!
The Queen of Pop, aka Kylie Minogue. Love her or loathe her, you have to admit she has staying power. She has been in the music industry for well over 20 years now and has had some amazing pop hits.
Light Years by Kylie was released in 2000 and is a fabulous pop album that has brought out some of Kylie's greatest hits in my opinion and shows she is back to her best. Is is viewed by many as her comeback album as it saw her return to her pop roots and to the top of the charts. THe album is Kylie's seventh album and it reached number two in the United Kingdom and one on the Australian album charts. According to an article I read the album has sold over 2 million copies to date.
The album starts off with one of my favourite songs, Spinning Around. It's the ultimate pop/disco classic and always a hit on the dance floor. It's quite uplifting and literally will have you Spinning Around when you hear it. Before the song came out Kylie had not had a number-one single in Australia since "Confide In Me" in 1994 and in the UK since "Tears on My Pillow" ten years earlier. Spinning Around became a world-wide success, going to number one in the UK and Australia. Spinning Around was actually intended for Paula Abdul's comeback album as she actually wrote the lyrics but it was given to Kylie and the rest is history.
The second track, On a Night Like This was actually performed by Kylie in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games' closing ceremony, watched by a worldwide audience. Another highlight on the Album is Kids which was a duet with Robbie Williams. This track reached number 2 in the UK charts and was certified silver. The rest of the album is as follows:

This was the album which saw Kylie making her big comeback. She had experienced a dodgy indie spell with some flop hits like 'Did It Again' and needed something big and bold to come back with. Her change in musical direction was a step towards a more disco influenced sound. It was a wise move which paid off quickly.

The start is superb, 'Spinning Around' is all seventies disco magic, a beat which whisks you off your feet straight away and playful vocals from Kylie as she delivers a catchy and bright chorus. You can see the glitterballs in the background!
'On A Night Like This' is a belter, a strong outright pop song with a dance beat. The chorus is affirming and uplifting and will make you think of good summer nights abroad with loved ones. For something more subdued, check out 'Kids' which pairs her with Robbie Williams. The duet is done with style, though it is too long, I would have trimmed it by a good thirty seconds to give it more punch. My other recommendation is the gloriously camp 'Your Disco Needs You'. This is one you can imagine dancing too while wearing a feather boa and leg warmers. It harks back the sound of Village People with a macho kind of chanty chorus sitting well with Kylie's sweet vocals.
14 tracks gives you good value here, I didn't like one of the songs, 'Butterfly was rather drippy, but the rest gives you a good rounded smattering of disco fuelled pop. A good album
After breaking away from the SAW team and dabbling in credible dance music and indie during most of the 90s, Kylie returned to prominence with a pure pop gem in the form of Light Years.
Light Years is my personal favourite album of Kylie's and always perks me up with it's sense of real, unashamed fun and campness. The album contains my favourite Kylie track which is 'On A Night Like This', as well as the other singles 'Spinning Around', 'Kids' (with Robbie Williams) and 'Please Stay'.
Aside from the singles you have 'Your Disco Needs You' which is about the only song on earth which succeeds in being camper than 'YMCA', solid dance-pop like 'Butterfly', 'Disco Down' and the title track, shimmy-shaking 'Koocachoo', retro inspired pop such as 'Loveboat' and 'Under The Influence Of Love' and an uplifting guitar pop number 'I'm So High'. Yes, the album is very cheesy and very camp, but it makes no apologies for this and will instantly get you hooked.
Very occasionally, Kylie Minogue comes up with an album that isn't half made up of brilliant singles and half made up of B-side fodder. The most ironic thing is that she is at her best when writing and contributing to her own material, whilst being most recognised for allowing others to write her songs.
Light Years was the first of a new era for Kylie, after her daliance with chic pop went a bit awry. And whilst its back to basics, its isn't neccessarily a step back. The album is as polished and varied as an album could be, producing at least 9 potential singles. Even the inclusion of a hidden track called Password shows a confidence in the material on display. Something that Kylie has been able to repeat again. (For the hidden track, stick the CD on, and wind back 3+ minutes and just let it play).
Album opener Spinning Around sets the stall perfectly. Written by a handful of pop has-beens, Kylie oozes self-esteem as she hits the dancefloor, leaving behind some unknown ex who she is Spinning past. It has a killer chorus, and the video has become one of those all time classic moments in pop. Similarities to George Michael's Fastlove period have often been cited, and the track certainly comes from the same mould of pop that basically states "I'm back and better than ever".
Rather than resting on her laurels though, Kylie tirades through such a mixed and varied collection of songs that you are only getting accustomed to one sound before another one is chucked in. On A Night Like This is one of those Euro-pop tracks with a slightly maudlin sound but that fills dancefloors the country over. Its not dis-similar in style to Cher's vocodered moment in pop.
Its early-80s disco for the brilliant So Now Goodbye. A big chorus that basically kicks somebody out of her life, whilst musing on her new found survival is the perfect ode to breaking up. There's a sort of theme running through the album thats becoming evident by song 3 that has Kylie just looking to bounce back and enjoy her life.
Disco Down is slightly similar to Pulp's Disco Down with its guitar-esque intro and hard disco edge. There's also a nice little subtle chiming in the background that would make this the most upbeat Christmas single ever had Kylie and co decided upon that route. Other subtle references to Le Freak and Dancing Queen lend a certain cheeky irony to proceedings that is most evident in the Guy Chambers / Robbie Williams / Kylie Minogue penned tracks.
More about the Chambers collaborations as Loveboat, where they go overboard with the 007 references and French innuendo. Its a pastiche to the 70s, and whilst a bit cheesey, is extremely hummable.
There is a small psychadelic moment come track 6 with Kylie's Kookachoo referring to an obsession with some kind of poster model. This track wouldn't be out of place in an Austin Powers film.
The album's most controversial moment is in the form of the big disco number Your Disco Needs You. Whilst not particularly out of the ordinary, its the fan reaction that gets this one talked about the most. When the camped up disco track got overlooked for a UK single release in 2000, highly strung fans camped at Kylie's record label and called for a re-think. An eventual brilliant reworking by the Casino Brothers saw a limited Australian and German release. It's slightly remiscent of Pet Shop Boys and Village People with Kylie's verbal French bridge hamming proceedings up further.
The album goes latino for a weak and under-par Please Stay, which would cause further outrage with fans when it became Kylie's Christmas release in 2000. Its flat chorus and bland verses weren't exactly a hit, but despite that it was a relative radio hit, and top 10 UK chart hit for her.
Bittersweet Goodbye is the oddest moment on the album. A meloncholy ballad with only a piano backdrop Kylie warbles all over the scales to no avail. Its an awful song that sometimes has her voice wailing like an out of control cat, and there is no more authenticity added by the claim that it was written for her late ex-lover Michael Hutchence.
Butterfly brings the album back to life though with a stomping club backdrop and an excellent chorus. Kylie belts out the lyrics perfectly, and there are more references to dancing and wings etc. Possibly the best track on the album, this was another song that had to be forced into a limited release after such demand for its release had fans in a foaming frenzy.
The most SAW-esque entry on this album though is Kylie's fine cover of Under The Influence Of Love, originally recorded by Barry Manilow. Its everybit as obvious as the title would suggest, with Kylie falling under the influence and feeling helpless. Whilst its her poppiest moment, it also borrows from that soulful disco era that the original spawns from.
I'm So High takes another path again for the album. Its a guitar laden track with quirky lyrics about Franjipani trees and lying poolside. Its a fantastic summer track that wouldn't be out of place with the roof down on your car cruising alongside the beach.
Kids is the final Chambers / Williams contribution to the album, and was supposed to be recorded solely by Kylie. However, when she turned up to the studio, Williams asked her if she cared to record it with him. The rest is history. Its now classic Kylie and Robbie, gave her one of her biggest hits, and remains a live favourite at both their gigs.
The album closer is the title track Light Years. Borrowing vividly from Donna Summer's I Feel Love, the comparison's became so obvious that Kylie ended up merging both songs in one of her tours. Light Years is gloriously transparent, musing about such drivel as pop stars on the moon. It reminds me vaguely of The Carpenters Interplanetery Craft in terms of its odd references to space on an otherwise disco-eque pop album. But if ever a reference worked in disco music, its outer space. And Kylie's airy fairy vocals are perfect. Add to that a cheesetastic bridge where Kylie plays out the fantasy of being an air hostess, its the perfect close to the album.
This album peaked at number 2 in the UK, and became Kylie's biggest selling album in a decade, its since been surpassed twice. However, at the time, it was considered a huge hit. It bops through a huge array of pop, dance and disco music and throws in a bit of tongue'n'cheek. It would have seemed that Kylie had found her niche in this album, although her own need to keep moving forward has more recently seen her somewhat thwarted. Its fine to release albums that dont sound the same as your last, as long as their is some consistency and artistic development. Kylie's label seem unable to know where exactly Kylie belongs, and therefore its become the norm that her albums only sell moderate amounts whilst her hugely successful tours sell in minutes.
Light Years most famous producers are Robbie and writing partner Guy Chambers, and whilst the four tracks (three of which were co-written with Kylie) are excellent pop records, more subtle and interesting tracks come from the hands of such producers as Kylie's long term collaborator Steve Anderson. The combination of the big pop numbers and the more breezey summer tracks are what makes this album an glittery near perfect pop album that rides over every other album that Kylie has ever recorded.
After 7 years and 2 albums at British indie label DeConstruction, Kylie exploded back onto the pop scene with a perfect bum and pair of gold hotpants to rocket to number 1 with Spinning Around (written by Paula Abdul), a camp disco track that set the tone for what was to follow. Minogue's stiletto disco heel struck pop oil with the following single, the sexy, sultry 'On a Night like this', before Kylie proved she was back doing what she does best with the camp pop classic that is Light Years.
Packed full of fun, dancy pop tunes and some thumping disco beats, Light Years is guranteed to fill a dancefloor with its high tempo camp classics. A masterful blend of electro and instrumental sounding songs, with drums replacing simple beats for songs and vice-versa, accompanying Minogue's perfectly suited voice and energy, it was easily the pop album of the year.
Following the two massive leading singles of Spinning Around and On a Night like this, the album is bursting with treats. The fantastic, high tempo, pumping rock duet of 'Kids' with Robbie Williams, one of the millennium's biggest pop stars, is simply fantastic and always gets a crowd going, with its sexy back-and-forth and lashings of sexual tension in the accompanying video it's one of the peaks of the album. The album isn't all camp disco however, with the beautiful, enchanting ballad 'Bittersweet Goodbye', where Minogue delivers a tear jerking vocal performance unlike any other, supported by simple, beautiful piano and orchestral music.
However it's still mostly camp disco, especially with what was an absolute treat for her gay fanbase, 'Your Disco Needs You', which takes her camp levels to new heights in a huge almost celebratory style song loaded with pride and passion as it kicks off with a brass band and grooves its way through a thumping tune, an inspirational French speech from Kylie and just lets everything out. With a slight drift from the camp disco, 'Please Stay' indulges in a light, fast acoustic sound, backed up by a thumping beat and lauded by soothing, inviting vocals from Minogue, she draws you into it and makes you feel like you're strutting the romantic streets of Paris. However, all these are mere sparks from a flame, with the rest of the album delivering pop perfection from the first note to the last.

La-la-la la-la-la-la-la... For some reason, the press credits the Kylie revival to her most recent release 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' and the #1 album 'Fever'. Although 'Can't...' was her biggest selling hit single ever, it was arguably 'Light Years' which propelled Kylie back from obscurity into the public consciousness. Spawning 4 Top 10 hits, and a #1, it was a return to form following her unsuccessful dabble with indie. The album opener is the stunning 'Spinning Around'. Her first #1 since 'Hand On Your Heart' (back in 1990, pop-pickers!), it was her poppiest song since she was still known as TAFKAC (the artist formerly known as Charlene). A deserved #1, it sounded as good on the dancefloor as it did on the radio. Of course, it is not possible not to mention the video, which saw Kylie dancing in gold hot-pants, which were apparently bought for 50p off the market. Wouldn't catch J-Lo to admitting to something like that... The second track was the almost-as-successful 'On A Night Like This', although for me, this wasn't anywhere as near as good as some of the others on the album. Still, it reached #2, and the video included even more Kylie nakedness. 'So Now Goodbye' and 'Disco Down' are the next two tracks, both of which are reasonable enough without being outstanding. The latter track, you may be disappointed, is not a cover of the track by Shed 7. Oh no. The fifth track 'Love Boat' is one of those instantly hummable summer songs, and is one that Kylie sings in her live shows. A lush chorus complements the chorus, complete with its lyrics about martinis and bikinis. Possibly one that they should have released... 'Koocachoo' is another that she tends to sing live, although is not quite up to the standard of some of the tracks on the album. 'Your Disco Needs You' is perhaps th
e best Kylie song that she has never released, and is possibly the only song to contain a reference to scrabble. A complete floorfiller everywhere, it is memorable for it's Go West-esque chorus (as in the Pet Shop Boys, not the bad 80's band), and it's French bits. Pure pop at its best. 'Please Stay' is, in my humble opinion', possibly the best track released off the album, with it's flamenco bits and yet another killer chorus. This is the one with Kylie sliding down the poll in the video... 'Bittersweet Goodbye' is a quiet one that doesn't really gel with the rest of the album. Press the skip button, and you will arrive at 'Butterfly', which a trancy number, and surprisingly good. And in no way related to the Mariah Carey track of the same name. Probably best to think of Kylie as the Red Admiral, and Mariah as the Cabbage White. 'Butterfly' also happens to be one of my favourites off the album. 'Under The Influence Of Love' is another uptempo swing-a-long, which would have sounded at home on a Kylie album of years gone by. 'I'm So High' is perhaps not the most memorable track off the album, but is nonetheless listenable enough. The penultimate track is 'Kids', her near-chart topper with Robbie Williams. Too much Williams, and not enough Minogue for my liking. Still, the rest of the album more than makes up for it. The album's title track is also the last. Another dancefloor filler, 'Light Years' is one of her best ever tracks, even with the spoken bits, where Kylie plays air hostess. I guess you kind of have to listen to it... This album is recommended to all those who have bought and enjoyed 'Fever', as it really is in the same vein. Despite a couple of dodgy tracks, most of this album is pure pop at its best. Kylie Minogue - Light Years When a pop star transcends to the level of being able to drop their surname you know they've truly made it. Kylie is one such person and its with "Light Years" that the original Spice Girl returns to her pop sensibilities. After the Cute Kylie, Sexy Kylie, Indie Kylie and numerous other incarnations its now in the year 2000 that we see her return to SEXY KYLIE. We've all seen the video's to "Spinning Around" and "On A Night Like This". But is there more to her than a couple of saucy vids. After the last album which saw her collaborating with the like of James Dean Bradfield (Manics) many thought that the end of Kylie was nigh. Well, personally I liked "Some Kind Of Bliss" and the rest of them (It comes with being a huge Manics fan). The first highlight of the album is "Disco Down" which follows the two recent single's. Although not quite managing to reach the glory days of here S.A.W phase its still one of the better tracks on the album. The faintly embarrassing "Loveboat" and "Koocachoo" fills the gap until "Your Disco Needs You". A glorious slice of camp pop done Pet Shop Boys style. Its one of the two tracks co-written with Robbie Williams and the funny thing is it beats anything written for Robbie's album, surprisingly "Loveboat" is the other track. The touching "Bittersweet Goodbye" is the only ballad on the album, which is a pity because in many ways the best track on here. Purely because it doesn't seem contrived, its not that huge Celine Dion power ballad or it doesn't try to be a post modern beats laden ballad. Again the Nolan Sisters inspired "Under The Influence Of Love" and indie kylie of "I'm So High" work for just being natural. Like everyone else I preferred the SAW material and maybe she should have hooked up with those guys
after the success of Scooch and Steps. Sadly this album only ranks above the frankly average on a few occasions, maybe if she'd have spent a couple of months more it could have been a return to form but in its present form it left me disappointed. Kylie suffered a bit of a backlash after her last album- "Kylie Minogue"- many thought that she had dipped her toes into too many musical genres including Indie and dance. Others thought that she was losing sight of why she was popular in the first place. Madonna had also made a huge comeback with Ray Of Light and Kylie looked as if her anthem "What Do I Have To Do" would end up being her signature tune. But she is back and Light Years is proof that there is room for both artists in the charts. Track 1- is SPINNING AROUND which put Kylie back at number one in the singles charts. This 'personal' track with a disco beat reminds you of glitterballs, sequins and flares- a great opening track which sets the scene. Next up is ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS (another hit) which shows Kylie doing grown up pop. It also retains the classic hook which like a stick of rock has "Minogue" running right through the middle of it. SO NOW GOODBYE is an easy going track but possibly one of the weaker songs on the album. It reminds you of disco days gone by but is weak lyrically. Personal faves of mine are: BUTTERFLY- is a cheesy dance track would be awful if anyone else attempted it. But Kylie gives it her all and turns a weak song into a dance classic. KIDS- with Robbie Williams sounds better now that it isn't in the charts and overplayed. YOUR DISCO NEEDS YOU- is Village People meets The Pet Shop Boys and it's a canny addition to the album. You feel that the track a personal thankyou to the gay audience who have stuck with the Antipodean sex kitten when everyone else hid her early albums or walked straight past the new ones as they languished in Woolie's bargain bin. PLEASE STAY- reminds you of La Isla Bonita with it's catchy latin hook which evokes memories/images of waves lapping,the smell of sun tan cream, and sand beneath your feet. LIGHT YEARS- is
a popular track as it is a homage to those who have stuck with Kylie through the years. She even thanks you at the end for travelling on KM Airlines! Overall this album is a worthy addition to any collection. If you have avoided Kylie before as you have thought that she was Madonna-lite, you could be in for a suprise. ONLY CRITICISM- that there were less disco/70's style songs on the album. Two would be fine but many of them like Disco Down, Your Disco Needs You, So Now Goodbye and Loveboat cover the same ground. But there are 14 tracks on the album- and what a change from other artists who fill em with ballads! Otherwise this should keep you going until the new album which should be great if the new single is anything to go by! Can't get it out of my head!
Kylie has always been regarded as a rather second-rate Madonna. After hearing this album it should be clear to most that she needs no comparisons, she is just KYLIE! After the relative failure of her previous indie/rock-chick phase, Kylie knew it was back to the drawing board, and indeed back to her roots. The music on this album is almost purely disco-pop- Kylie doing what she does best. Most peolpe will be familiar with the hits from this album- " Spinnig Around", her comeback no.1 stomper, "On a Night Like This", slightly smoother than the previous track it's still ideal for shaking your butt to. Other than these of course theres "Kids", a slightly different version to the single release (Kylie sings than more than Robbie on this one!) and "Please stay", which coincidentally was co-written by john themis, an excellent guitarist and writer who works very closely with Boy George. You'd be forgiven for thinking that if you took away the above sinlges, the rest would be filler tracks, but nothing could be further from the truth.... "So now Goodbye" is a very 70's souunding track, very 'up', very 'shake your hip's', very catchy, very good! "Disco Down" My favourite track of the album, pure anthemic pop, perfect for letting your hair down, a massive hit in theclubs, it's been released as a sinlge all over the world, but unfortuantely not in the UK. "Loveboat" Another 70's sounding track,once again perfect for bopping around to! "Koochachoo" A slighltly mellower moment (probably just as well after all the energy so far!) "Your Disco Needs You" Similar style to "Disco Down"This is another anthemn just waiting to happen. Think of The Pet Shop Boys singing "Go West".This reminds me very much of that track. "Bittersweet Goo
dbye" and "Butterfly" The two slowest tracks on the album, Kylie's voice is sweet and mellow on these ballads, a joy to listen to. "Under the Influence of Love"- What can I say, another dance-floor filler! "Light Years" Sang brilliantly ,this is a great track,where Kylie informs you she's the pilot taking you on a journey (which this album certainly does, all the way from the sofa to the dance-floor) All in all this is a great disco album, if oyu like Kylie you'll love this. If you don't like Kylie then you don't know what you're missing!
Whilst the idea of television soap stars who become popstars may be universally frowned upon, there can be few people who would deny that Kylie Minogue is the only person who has really achieved this 100% successfully. A worthy contender for the Queen of Pop crown, Kylie has reinvented herself more times than the Blind Date theme music - fourteen years after she first hit the music scene she is still here, celebrating top ten singles. Kylie's biggest mistake was when she decided to take herself, and her music, all too seriously. Having left the PWL stable in 1993, she signed to the (then very trendy) dance music label deConstruction and delivered a credible album (Kylie Minogue) which spawned three singles. The next album was a rather dodgy concoction of styles in which Ms Minogue decided to leave her poppy roots behind - and was an unequivocal failure. Thankfully, Kylie decided that her success - and ultimately her future - lay in the discos where she had been experiencing cult status up until the deConstruction faux pas. And so last year, now signed to Parlophone, Kylie released her latest album - Light Years - and firmly established herself again as a serious chart artist. One of Kylie's saving graces as she has grown older is that she has managed to set herself up as a sex symbol. Continuously rated highly in those FHM Sexiest Women polls, the whole "Light Years" experience is about being sexy - and having fun. No more so was this evident than with the first single off the album - "Spinning Around". Entering the Singles Chart at number 1, "Spinning Around" saw Kylie's (some would say welcome) return to hotpants and discos and the first in a series of risqué videos, in which Kylie writhed around in - well, not much really. Light Years draws together a number of different influences. Not entirely dissimilar to some of the early Stock Aitken Waterman material that she started out with, th
ere are a lot of bouncy disco tinged tracks. Apart from "Spinning Around", "So Now Goodbye", "Disco Down" and "Loveboat" camp it up in full disco fever fashion. These are summer songs, designed to be listened to whilst cruising along a beach road in a VW convertible - and great fun they are too. The campness reaches fever pitch with the track "Your Disco Needs You" - an obvious throwback to the seventies, complete with Village People style chanting as the track opens. Sounds laughable - but it actually works. The second track, which was also the second single, is one of two or three tracks that harden the sound slightly, and could easily have been recorded by other artists. "On A Night Like This" is very similar to the Jennifer Lopez hit Waiting For Tonight. "Please Stay" is a latin-tinged affair with a bubbling beat and flamenco arrangement, not unlike the La Isla Bonita end of the Madonna scale. "Butterfly" sounds more like the sort of thing that Kylie's sister Dannii would have recorded. It is quite clear that Kylie has been influenced by some of the other chart stars that were occupying her place in the charts. It's not all good though. The Robbie Williams duet "Kids" seems a little out of place to me, with a slightly edgier, rock-influenced sound that is not in keeping with the rest of the disc. "Bittersweet Goodbye" is a seriously dodgy ballad that provides further evidence that Kylie cannot do the slow ones. The last track, Light Years, sounds uncannily like Visage's Fade To Grey and, whilst not a bad track, has some extremely irritating Kylie voice overs which could have come straight from a Vengaboys album. Nonetheless, I have to say that I really like this album. Whilst not among the most musically-accomplished discs of the last year, Light Years is lots of fun, partly injected no doubt by the musical influence of Robbi
e Williams who co-wrote a couple of the tracks. Once Kylie stops taking herself too seriously I think she realises that she can create a sound that is very chart-friendly. This is definitely a more mature, confident Kylie though - her vocals are richer than the SAW years - and this album will appeal outside the teeny-boppers' circle of buying power. Sneaky tip - there is currently a limited edition tour version of the disc which comes complete with a free bonus cd that has nine mixes of the chart singles on it. Sneaky tip no.2. - There is a hidden track before track 1 - on track 1 press the Back button and you'll find a song at -1. Sneaky tip no. 3 - Guys - I still wouldn't tell your mates down the pub you like Kylie. You'll never live it down.
I am a bit confused, what year is this? 2001 right? Why this ammount of (copied) disco on one album? Has anyone ever heard the Bette Midler album 'Thighs and Whispers'? If you haven't and you liked 'Light years', this 1978 Midler album for you.... ...Disco galore and properly done. Kylie Minogue was onto something good when she was with De-Construction records, Ok nobody bought it, but the material was becoming interesting and adult. Now Ms. Minogue seems to have fallen back to her 1987status by releasing material that is purely commercial and about being propular. Is it fame or credibility that she needs more? I don't know.... She does a good track with Robbie and the ones he wrote for her are great - it is the appalling and unoriginal production that lets them down. Is Kylie the Village people? - yes Is Kylie De-lite? - yes Is kylie the Spice Girls - yes Is Kylie ever just Kylie Minogue? - No, never. But I question as to whether she know what 'Kylie Minogue' is... we don't. This is a poor uninteresting album with noting to show for the work of Minogue, her producers and the always crediable Williams. Someone should tell Kylie to stop miming into a hairbrush in front of a mirror, pretending she is on Top of the Tops. Someone should tell her that she already is......
It's been a long time coming but SHE'S BACK!. No longer trying to be a serious indie chick (who in doing so got lost in the wilderness, the epitome of which was 1998's Impossible Princess (or Kylie Minogue) KYLIE, the one we all remember and love from yesteryear is back. Yes kids Kylie is back and is well and truly pop again. Before you stop reading give her a chance, she's not half bad! Last year saw a return to the dancefloor as everyone from the kiddies to the grannies began "Spinning Around" (for everyones' sake get out of the way!)The lyrics are quite apt for the queen of comebacks and re-invention (not including Madonna)as she states "Did I forget to mention that I found a new direction and it leads back to me". I for one am glad to hear it! For all the abuse and fun that was poked at me for liking Kylie in the early years it is a nice feeling to finally be the one to say "I told you so!" Kylie is the new black as it were. Lets hope she stays a while this time round. Look out for the tour in the coming months. In the meantime... The mini album review: Spinning Around Living in Wales is a funny experience, going to the same few places dancing the night away week after week (I am a student at Aberystwyth uni) can be monotonous. However when the crowd really start to get going is when the classic (cheesey) dance songs start playing. This very song made every man and his dog sit up and realise pop kylie is back I remember a time when I would hear one of my favourite songs of Kylie's played in a club or disco (showing my age!) and would be gone again just as fast. Well nine months later they're still playing and will continue to do so. The first get up and dance like you don't care song for the new millennium. On A Night Like This Initially I didn't like this one but it grows on you. She wants to stay forever, I think we sho
uld let her. Screw anything the tabloids may say and get back to what you know. Reinvent yourself no more my dear. This track has a slightly more Euro-dance feel to it. The second single from the album and another one still doing the club rounds. Go Kylie! So Now Goodbye DON'T WORRY! This isn't the shortest album in history, this is simply the title of the third track which is initially a let down after the opening singles. It grows on you and then its something which you just have to sing along to. An anthem for those stuck in a bad relationship (could have used it last year - where were you Kylie?). Sounds kind of Charlie's Angels ish (as in the style of the original series' swanky muzak.) Disco Down My choice for next single. UPDATE!! (Alas there will be no more singles from "Light Years" though a new album is due in the summer possibly. It begs the question WHY?!! This album is filled with classic pop. You really do need this album) ANYWAY... Kylie goes seventies (and fights off the impending ABBA lawsuit one imagines) Again another one that dealsw ith the topic of lost love; theres quite a lot of lost love in this album. You'll be dancing along oblivious though, it doesn't really sdound like a sad song. Another classic. It won't be released though! (UPDATE: Aah Isn't hindsight wonderful. Maybe I should be an astrologer??) Loveboat I don't like this one very much. Apparrently influenced by the show of the same name. Very seventies swank again and it has grown on me after some time. A guy chambers and robbie williams effort. "Kids" is better. Kookachoo Blatant rip off of "...And the beat goes on" turns into quite a nice little number. I especially like the harmonies in the chorus. Kylie where did you learn to get so versatile. Your Disco Needs You Kylie does camp like never before (well apart from the pet shop boys and erasure) Quite a nice song and one that has been a hit in many gay clubs around the country and its not surprising. Originally considered as the first single. Is also availabe in the form of the extended almighty mix on the "On A Night" single. Has been released in Germany as a asingle and will also do so in Australia. Kylie's UK fanclub website lobbied for its release over here. Its not gonna happen though :( Please Stay The tragically underrated third single from the album (discounting "Kids") "Please Stay" is Kylie's attempt to join the latino bandwagon, admittedly the bandwagon is about to break under the pressure but hey it's Kylie - give her a chance! one of my faves. more like the old pwl stuff and none the worse for it. Just try and ignore the turn on "An audience with Ricky Martin" What were you thinking Kylie??? Bittersweet Goodbye I originally hated it but now I think it's quite nice. It doesn't fit in terribly well with the rest of the album though. It sounds kind of chrismassy at the end with a load of bells coming in. Another goodbye song. is she trying to tell us something? (UPDATE: Apparrently not with a new single and album looming.) Butterfly More dance from little miss Minogue. possible next single. (UPDATE: See above. This album deserves more single releases!) Not a favourite of mine but its something you could dance to quite easily cos it has a good beat and gets going quite nicely. could do with a nice remix (UPDATE: Check out the re-release of "Light Years" it will include exactly that. have fitted between "lets get to it" and "kylie minogue (1994)" easy to listen to though. won't offend the grannies but then hey in this day and age what does? (joke) I'm So High No she hasn't gone and done anything illegal. (We hope) It's another harmless slice of pop and similar to "Under The Influence". It is okay if a fairly unremarkable song, which on a plus point has a nice chorus :) Kids The one with a certain Mr Robert Williams. Another single (technically attributed to Robbie's "Sing When You're Winning" album). If nothing else this song proves that the album can shift through different styles of song without jolting (too much). It has one hell of an anthemic feel to it. Goes down especially well in Aberystwyth's student union club. Another classic in the making. Light Years Are you ready to fly K-M Air? Kylie seems to have lost the dodgy accent she gained during the early britain years (and that god awful streetfighter film) that forced english accent. she is camping it up again and this dancey number. "take us to the popstars on the moon" You can take us anytime Kylie. "Thankyou for flying k-m air. please fly with us again" she states at the albums close. Don't leave it too long! There is a hidden track before "Spinning Around" called "Password". It's okay but sounds a bit like dee-lite groove is in the heart. Nevertheless if we're getting 15 songs rather than the usual 10 then that's fine by me. In conclusion buy it if you liked her PWL days including "Better The Devil You Know" (who did'nt like that song). this album has matured slightly from there and is a classic piece of pop for the new millennium. Kylie has regained her mantle of princess of Pop. Don't believe me- ask Madonna If I haven't convinced you that you need this album
yet then try this YOU MUST HAVE THIS ALBUM!! As they say: "There is old pop. There is new pop. And there is Kylie Minogue. Let the Light Years begin. Nuff said!
ANOTHER EXCELLENT OFFERING FROM THE QUEEN OF POP! Just when we thought she couldn’t get any better after the last album here she is back again with Light Years, a collection of 15 upbeat tracks that grow and grow on you, get stuck in your head and make your feet wiggle and jiggle! There is also a secret track to be found at the end of track 15 at five minutes and two seconds. (I have just found out that this is only on some CD's, it seems that by sheer fluke, I have an import which includes the German version of Disco Down!) I have difficulty in choosing a favourite track from this album as I think they are all fab. It is one of those albums that when each song begins you find yourself saying – ‘oh, I love this one!’ Then the next one begins and you find yourself saying the same thing (over and over again, 15 times)! The tunes are catchy and the lyrics memorable but definitely a different style from what we have heard from Ms Minogue in the past. Unless you have had your head stuck in the ground you can't have failed to hear Spinning Around and Please Stay, both of which are on the album. Also featured is Kylie’s duet with Robbie – Kids. I have played it to death and wouldn’t have cared how much I paid for it, (can you tell how much I like this album yet?) but if you want a bargain, how about shopping around the net, either way, you'll love this album.
