... not a dull moment in it. Silent all these years has a very easy listening feel to it, is gentle on the ear, the softest song on the CD and a pleasure to listen to. A stark contrast from Precious Things that follows it, fast repeated piano chords, howling contrasted with deep deep vocals before going back to her normal range. A song you won't forget in a hurry. Winter is a slow melodic ballad but quite sad and very moving. Happy Phantom very upbeat and lively - even though it speaks of her death! China a bit of a weak on...more

Crowned Review Little Earthquakes - Tori Amos: What's so amazing about really deep thoughts? (2459 words)
by - written on 27/07/01 (Very useful, 285 readings)
Rating:

Interesting how an artist can rehabilitate their reputation isn’t it? These days Tori Amos sits firmly near the top of the celebrated female singer songwriter food chain. Sure she doesn’t sell as many records as say Dido, instead she has managed to straddle that thin line between cult popularity and mainstream exceptance. American by birth she has nevertheless achieved success on both sides of the Atlantic including two very successful UK singles (‘Cornflake Girl’, which reached number four in Jan 1994 (thanks Blackjane) and the remix of ‘Professional Widow’, which despite only including about two lines from the original song made ...  Read the complete review

Well, I was gone for a while, but I decided to come back, since you all seem to love me so much. Ahem. Rapidly exiting my deluded fantasies for a brief moment, I'm back for a while - I have less time to write opinions at the moment, as I'm at work, writing a book, and creating computer programs all at the same time! But rest easy, sit back, and enjoy the opinion my children, because I hope it shall be a good one? What does the word 'strange' mean to you? Do you think of Dali, or Damien Hurst, or maybe something even worse? Well, I'm here to talk to you about strange music. As my good buddy Craig (craiggy_boy) will no doubt tell you, we can ...  Read the complete review

I recently got shown Tori Amos' by a close friend and I have been hooked ever since...in fact for the past 2 weeks I don't think I have listened to anything else, and I have bought 4 of the albums in the same space of time. It's not often music has that sort of an effect on me and I will now try to explain why. And if this review only shows up to 9. Mother for you not all 12 tracks please send me a message as it doesn;t seem to want to accept the last tracks. I am getting annoyed. Boring stuff: Title: Little Earthquakes Artist: Tori Amos Price: I got it for £10 from HMV Genre: Alternative Released: 1992 Tori ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Seismic (943 words)

Rating:

Tori Amos is regarded by many as one of the most influential singer-songwriters to emerge from the 1990's. Her emotional, heartfelt and often humourous compositions are characteristically original and have the hallmarks of singer unrivalled in her field. Where as Tracy Chapman before her demonstrated the effective simplicity of a girl and her guitar, Amos employs a piano to accompany her fragile and sincere vocal. Although she released a number of records in the 1980's whilst in a previous band, it was with 1992's 'Little Earthquakes' that she made a big impression on the world-wide music scene. The simple, compact packaging illustrates ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Little Earthquakes - Tori Amos: Simply wonderful (696 words)

A few short months ago, the name 'Tori Amos' meant nothing to me. I had heard of her, but I wasn't familiar with any of her music. Then, based on the recommendation of an aquaintence of mine, I decided to look into it. After hearing "Icicle" and "Baker, Baker", I ran out and bought "Under the Pink." Needless to say, I was not disappointed. The beautiful melodies and thought - provoking lyrics left a lasting impression on me. Soon after, I decided to purchase "Little Earthquakes," due to its reputation as Tori's strongest and most poignant album. As soon as I got home, I put in on and listened to it all the way ...  Read the complete review
