Newest Review: ... cover is a sepia photograph of the Beatles walking past a BBC building, looking very business-like. This is also the cover of ... more

... the accompanying booklet. If you turn this over however, you see a very similar picture, only this time the lads are horsing around. This serves to remind us just how young they were at the time. The back cover is taken up by the track listing. The 48 pages booklet enclosed is a mine of information and anecdotes and features some great pictures. A particular favourite of mine is a picture of Lennon sporting some Buddy Holly type glasses, in front of a very old fashioned microphone. All tracks are listed, along with...more

Premium Review Live At The Bbc - The Beatles: The Beatles liven the BBC! (762 words)

First, let me make this clear: I LOVE the Beatles, and although by no means a specialist, I am a big fan. This album is quite different from the rest of the Beatles' albums, as it is not up to their usual studio recorded, very well produced standards. All the tracks were recorded during sessions the band did at the BBC in 1963/65. And while this format often leads to a lack of sound quality (although I guess no-one could have produced this better than George Martin himself), this is more than compensated by the sheer joy of being able to hear the Fab Ones live. We are offered a glimpse of the brilliant live talent we were deprived of by the excesses of ...

Premium Review BBC = Brilliant Beatles Compilation (444 words)

Before I go any further, I have a confession to make?I own all of the Beatles albums. Well, all the British releases anyway. Including the Yellow Submarine soundtrack. So don?t expect me to be impartial here. What I must say is that this compilation is really for true fanatics only. ?The Beatles ? ?Live at the BBC?? showcases facets of this band that none of their studio albums can capture. However, you need a reference point to measure this essentially live album against. And that reference point is the early Beatles albums. This 2-CD, 69 track collection covers all of the bases of their early career. There are the covers of rock and roll ...

I love The Beatles! Don’t get me wrong – I’m not one of those ageing hippies who loved the band as a kid and never grew up. Indeed, I wasn’t even born until 1973 so by the time I was aware of ‘The Beatles’ they were long past having split up and John Lennon was already dead. Having said that, I’ve recently done a lot of research into the band in order to carry out some work I’ve been doing, and found that both the music and the myth have something great to offer, and this CD box set itself has a lot of intrinsic value. In the early 1960s, as they were becoming more and more popular, The Beatles were ...
