9 - Damien Rice

-DAMIEN RICE 9- Following the phenomenal success of his first album 0 in 2002, Damien Rice astounded us yet again in 2006 with his follow up album 9 . Having waited four years for this album to appear seemed like a lifetime and in a way I was in trepidation, fearing it couldn t possibly live up his breathtakingly beautiful album 0 . Damien Rice is an Irish folk singer from County Kildare, Ireland. His poetical lyrics and troubadour style have earned him his own unique niche in the music world. After only one album he is already a force to be reckoned with, with his dedication and commitment to his music, he is considered a lyrical genius, and a poet of our time.- ...

The first time I heard anything about Damien Rice was when a colleague of mine appeared in work listening to this album. I am always open to new bands and new sounds, so after hearing him raving about this album for a day or so I decided I needed to check it out for myself. After loaning his copy over night I decided that there was something pretty special about this album and that I should get myself a copy. Background Damien Rice was born in Ireland, just outside Dublin in the 70’s. In his youth he was a member of a band called Jupiter before leaving to go travelling around Europe for a year in the late 1990’s. When he returned to Ireland he was a lot more focused ...

Maybe its because this is not my regular taste in music, but Damien Rice seems to have come from nowhere over night to deliver one of the finest albums of recent years. I know that over night success thing is just a myth and is perpetuated by the way the music industry works, but Rice seems to be the man of the moment and his success is born out by this album. A little research tells me that he released his debut single, The Blowers Daughter in 2002 and this is the Irish singer songwriters debut album which followed soon after. Rice writes from the heart,a style reminiscent of David Gray in recent times, but carrying on a thread that weaves back in time to Jeff Buckley, ...

The Metal Opera - Tobias Sammet's Avantasia
Classic power metal inspired by an epic theme.
Nothing too out of the ordinary or particularly grandiose in this first part.
The Album - Ultrabeat
pretty green eyes
none really
Slaughter And Apparatus - Aborted
Aborted continue to improve, refining and incorporating further melodic elements into their sound.
Owes a significant debt to Carcass' 'Heartwork,' preventing it from being groundbreaking.
Sci-fi Lullabies - Suede
The first disc is amazing
A bit more hit and miss on disc 2
Riders Of The Plague - Absence
Making melodic death metal interesting again.
Still owes its sound entirely to earlier Swedish bands.
Obscuritatem Advoco Amplectere Me - Abruptum
You may get an unreasonable sense of the connoisseur from owning something so obscure.
The album.
Horrorhammer - Abscess
Fairly enjoyable mix of death metal and hardcore punk.
Hugely inconsistent and lacking in substance.
Deceptive Awareness - Ablaze In Hatred
Some great modern doom on the even-numbered songs.
Some incredibly average modern doom in-between.
Abomination - Abomination
Fine early death metal.
Repetitive and derivative.
