Advantages: Great Sound, Superb Early Set List
Disadvantages: Wont Appeal To Later Day Only Fans
Long before David Coverdale adopted the big hair and the US style heavy metal that brought the 1987 Whitesnake prolific period, he was the front man for a much smaller, classier and hard rockin' version of Whitesnake.
Live In The Heart Of The City was recorded over two dates in 1980 and one date in 1978 and from the legendary Hammersmith Odeon in London, England. This classic early live album features some excellent work form the two guitarists Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody and the solid vocal talents of Coverdale are apparent in every single track.
One of the most pleasing aspects of this album is the phenomenal sound quality throughout which really helps to create a vivid image and boosts the overall enjoyment of the set. Then, throw in the classic Fool For Your Loving and Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City and you get one of the all time great rock 'n roll live albums.
Whitesnake: Live in the Heart of the City is actually two albums in a way. When released it was a double album, disc two of which had in fact already been released in Japan years earlier and been much sort after in the UK on import. When the album received a western release 'disk one' was added, which was recorded more recently on the 'Ready And Willing' tour, to the previously released Japanese album to make a double album under the new title.
The original CD copies were missing Come On which originally opened BOTH albums, and so one was dropped to fit the double album on CD. This track has now been restored to this double disk set which is part of the Whitesnake EMI remasters, and the expended sleeve notes and audio quality breath life into this old classic. Certainly this can now be enjoyed in conjunction with the recent Live... In The Shadow Of The Blues double live album.
