The fact is that most of the songs are not actually "heavy", they don't use huge distorted guitar sounds to achieve the effect, and its partly this that makes the songs so interesting. The instruments used are generally pretty basic guitars, pianos and the like, often played in a very understated style, which provide a perfect counterpoint to the vocals, which are much more prominently, well, nuts... this Cave guy really nows how to cut loose. Well, first off, I'd better admit that I'm a big fan of Nick Cave, but I'll try my best not to be biased in any way.... This is a hell of an album, though! Nick Cave has never been the most accessible of artists, and this recording of a live gig is unlikely to change that. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have always been more about music as an art form, for expression, rather than about "a good tune". And in songs like From Her to Eternity, what you are hearing is pure emotional kick... this is a band on the verge of madness. Theres an intensity in this album which is rarely found.
