Advantages: Maybe, Two OK Tracks At A Pinch
Disadvantages: Most Of The Album
The third and final instalment to the so called Berlin Trilogy is musically very mixed bag, with only a handful of tracks at the back end of the album saving it - quite hard to imagine that some of the rubbish earlier on has anything to do with Mr Bowie!
Take for example African Night Flights which is lyrically oddball and just pain awful. Luckily the album somewhat improves thanks to the likes of the entertaining DJ and the loudest piece from the album, Look Back in Anger which was played live a fair bit.
As well as these two, Boys Keep Swinging saw a well received and deserved performance on Saturday Night Live, and not forgetting Repetition which covers the charming subject of wife beating and abuse. Despite being by far the best products from the album, these four couldn't drag it up and Lodger remains one of Bowie's worst albums which is very much for completists only, having said it some bizarrely rate it amongst his best output - I think not!

- 26/11/08 I have cmpleely the other opinion. This is one of my fave albums - Bowie is near peak form as an "extemporaneous" ; vocalist (Scary Monsters came next). And Simon House and Adrian Belew stamp their personalities all over the album. And Repetition is on it - a very important song. And, personally, I love African Night Flight! |
