Advantages: Great live tracks

Disadvantages: Celtic style will not appeal to everyone

Runrig are a unique band. Combining rock music with a more traditional Celtic style, they have always been popular in Scotland, but never really gained wider acceptance. Maybe it's a Celtic thing.

Long Distance is a best of album, covering their more recent albums (1987-96). There are a large number of tracks (17 in all), with several instrumentals and a couple of live tracks. Perhaps the best of these is their version of Loch Lomond, a traditional curtain-closer for their live gigs.

For those who prefer their music to be straight-forward rock, Hearthammer and Glory Road may be more to your taste.

Runrig have always had a unique sound, and it's likely that a number of people will not like this album as much as I do. Now their lead singer has left to pursue a career in politics, this is the only way of catching Runrig at their best.
