Premium Review Lost Dogs: Rarities And B Sides - Pearl Jam: Fascinating collection of rare and unreleased songs (214 words)

Rating:

Albums that comprise rarities and b-sides are a mixed bag, from the excellent (The Masterplan by Oasis), to the mediocre (Sawdust by The Killers), and sometimes separate the wheat from the chaff. Lost Dogs falls into the former category, the 2 disc set showcasing tracks from across the band's long career. The 'rare' tracks here are primarily drawn from 2 sources - the fan club christmas singles (Strangest Tribe, Drifting) and unreleased tracks from album sessions (All Night from the No Code era, Fatal from the Binaural era), and there are some true gems here that arguably would have enhanced the albums that they were written for. PEARL JAM - LOST DOGS ---------------------- Im usually a bit unsure about albums made up of rare tracks, as in a few cases the rare tracks are unknown for a pretty good reason, namely that they are pretty poor. So when I first heard that one of my favourite bands was going to release one I was both happy but also very wary of what the results were going to be like. Pearl Jam first hit the American grunge scene in the early 90's, and were instantly placed as Nirvana's rivals for ...  Read the complete review

An album with excellent lyrical and musical content

Great songs and the powerful vocals of Eddie Vedder

clever lyrics, beautiful vocals Too many slow tracks together

40 miserable moments bleak

Fine, consistently good pop music Not the strength of some modern vocalists

Choirs Of The Eye - Kayo Dot
Inventive and well-structured. Songs are far too long and uneven.

Diabolical Full Moon Mysticism - Immortal

Heart Of The Ages - In The Woods
Great bleak atmosphere maintained throughout. Songs are too long and too varied to be consistent.

In Full Gear - Stetsasonic
Lots of bangers One weak track

Kurtis Blow - Kurtis Blow
Classic material Inconsistent

Lifeline - Jesu
Atmospheric, uplifting post-rock for a rainy day. Lacks the punch that Godflesh/early Jesu fans might expect.

Liquid Tension Experiment - Liquid Tension Experiment
Excellent musicianship, some killer riffs and exciting A little relentless feeling at times

Lord Willin' - Clipse
Very original Nothing specific

Megatropolis - Iron Savior
Interesting concept and fun, Judas Priest style heavy metal. Owes everything to 'Painkiller' and the German post-'Painkiller' tradition.

Fueled By Hate - Jungle Rot
High quality old-school death metal... but new. No ideas of its own.
