Lost Souls... The Doves finest, as is often the case with debut albums - this is a classic and probably my favourite album of all time. A chilled out listen with great lyrics and amazing vocals from Jimi Goodwin. It's an album that transcends a specific period in ones life, rising above musical genres, impervious to clichés. I'm talking specifically about Britpop culture and the 'Madchester' scene to which Doves (or sub-sub as they were formally known) were born, formed in the wake of an acid house craze that swept through their hometown of Manchester, leading to a chance encounter between old school friend Jimi Goodwin and brothers, Jez and Andy Williams ... Waking up in the morning, there's not one album like 'Lost Souls' to really ease you out of your bed. It dazzles, shines and kicks back to really chill you out. 'Firesuite' is a gorgeous little instrumental, perfect at making you feel relaxed. It's warm, fuzzy guitars scurry across a laid back drum beat and really set the tone for the album. 'Here It Comes' is a more upbeat number, with its pounding beat and jazzy piano pieces, it's slick production and snazzy vocals will have you dancing around the living room- guaranteed. 'Break Me Gently' has become one of my favourites on this album, just for ... Read the complete review

Atmosphere. The Doves create it in abundance. From the second you hear the instrumental opener 'Firesuite' you know your not on a club 18-30 holiday. The black and white cover should have warned you about the moody but ultimately uplifting contents of this cracking CD. You may have heard 'Here it comes' before now, a petty catchy single from the end of '99 (radio one gave it a bit of pasty), and the recently released pop fizz 'Catch the sun'. If you liked those then this album's for you. Its a dark, dank, effect laden cathedral of hope ....or something. I love it. If your wanting something a little bit ... Read the complete review

From early nineties acid kids (Sub Sub) to millennium indie darlings, Doves have a come a long way and in doing so have produced one of the genuine surprises of 2000. 'Lost Souls' abounds with enormous helpings of memorable guitar based melodies that have such powerful edges they will leave you searching for scorch marks. Right from the off the Air-esque instrumental 'Firesuite' signals a burning talent ready to offload its many varied musical directions to a grateful public. Things simmer perfectly on by as the debut single 'Here It Comes' emerges possessing a swaggering beat and a tinkering piano lilt that is perfect for watching the ... Read the complete review

In some ways, i misjudged this album when i first heard it. Remember the hype, how Doves were going to fill the gap left in the wait for the new Radiohead album? Saviours of leftfield rock, they were meant to be... They used to be Sub Sub, y'know. Great! "Ain't No Love" was a brilliant song. A couple of years back, still under the name Sub Sub, they released a track with Tricky as vocalist, "Smoking Beagles", a dark, guitar-driven thing that was sinister and very promising. One of the early singles from this album, "Here It Comes", was oh-so anthemic. Things looked good. However, when the album arrived, and ... Read the complete review
