No Reply - Daylight Dies

Premium Review No Reply (195 words)

Rating:

Daylight Dies are an American band playing a distinctly European style of death metal, heavily influenced by the doom metal of Katatonia around their seminal Brave Murder Day release. This band s first album No Reply is far from a worthy successor, based around mostly dull and overly repetitive rhythms, but it still makes for pleasant background music for doom fans, even if it s not as gloomy as it perhaps should be, especially in the more upbeat moments such as I Wait and the catchy, very Katatonia-esque Four Corners. In the Silence is similar to a post-rock instrumental, rising gradually to a crescendo across its considerable length, and it leaves me feeling ...

Dismantling Devotion - Daylight Dies

Premium Review Dismantling Devotion (188 words)
by Frankingsteins - written on 21/06/08 (Useful, 8 readings)
Rating:

Daylight Dies second album finally goes some way towards establishing the band s own sound, even if they still essentially owe everything to Katatonia s Brave Murder Day. Nathan Ellis vocals are superior to those of his predecessor, deep and powerful in every song, and the guitars now stand out rather than fade exclusively into the background, the pleasant lead melodies at the end of A Life Less Lived actually making me wish for more as they faded to silence. The style is still dominated by slow, plodding drums, and while this keeps things nice and accessible, it does hinder the effect of the more sorrowful songs like All We Had. The last two songs hint towards ...

Tales From The B-side - Biohazard
Greater variety than the studio albums, with a few more punk offerings. Remixes only make bad songs worse.

State Of The World Address - Biohazard
Firmly establishes the template Biohazard sound. Greater rap influence will deter some hardcore punk fans.

Resurrection Through Carnage - Bloodbath
Should please fans of the early Swedish death bands. At times, sounds like a cheap imitation.

Nightmares Made Flesh - Bloodbath
Improved energy, technicality and fun factor. Still an imitation at its core.

No Holds Barred: Live - Biohazard
A strong collection of songs in an energetic performance. Punk songs aren't as well represented, and are rushed through.

New World Disorder - Biohazard
Plenty of breakdowns for hardcore mosh fans. Dull, monotonous and lacking in energy.

Mata Leao - Biohazard
Punk songs are more aggressive and energetic than before. Hip hop and hardcore punk rock no longer successfully combined, but set apart.

Means To An End - Biohazard
Return of the hardcore punk songs. The rest is tedious.

Breeding Death - Bloodbath
Crunchy, unpretentious old school death metal with great riffs and vocals Short, even for an EP

Biohazard - Biohazard
Original fusion of hardcore punk and hip hop that works quite well. Messier than later releases.
