After the success of Christina's other albums - Stripped and Back To Basics I was expecting great things with this album. It's clear that she has changed direction dramatically with this album...and I am afraid it's not for the better. Gone are the nice songs full of emotion and here are lots of shouty songs.
The album is very upbeat - most of the songs have a bit of go in them. However, there are none that I would say 'oh my god, I love this song' as they are all quite bland to be honest. I quite like the song 'Blank Page' as it's quite emotional and more like the old Christna. I would say that they are growers though. Songs which I don't particularly like are 'Army of Me' and
Christina has a very distinct voice - you can instantly recognise her voice as it is very hard and powerful. Whilst Christina is known for being quite 'shouty' - I think that she is far too shouty on this album - so much that I find she gets on my nerves after a while.
All in all, I wouldn't recommend this album. It's not Christina's best at all!
Thanks for reading!
I've loved Christina Aguilera's music for a long time and I've always praised her albums. The commercial performance of Bionic disappointed many people and left some of her fans relying on this album to be her epic comeback. I don't understand why people call this a failed attempt at a comeback. To be honest I don't really see it as a comeback at all but more of a sequel to Bionic. I've always admired Christina for rebelling against the critics and going through various styles of music. She released Bionic in 2010 and since then, she's been doing The Voice in the USA and also did a cool movie called Burlesque.
There is no obvious transformation in this one. I think that Christina has stuck to the modern and mixed bag style from Bionic but toned down the sexual and electronic bits. I kinda thing Christina's body give her more attention than her music nowadays. I really enjoyed this album, but I don't think I could ever consider it a classic.
Stripped and Back To Basics were two of her best albums. Stripped is my favourite, but I can't help but feel that hidden beneath all these reinventions of herself that she's trying to recreate the tender greatness of Stripped. Each of her albums give out different vibes and feelings, but for me Lotus feels like a sequel to Bionic.
I really like the album, but it's nothing exceptional, but it's not exactly a complete disaster. I can't help but feel that this is one of her filler albums. I kinda feel bad for saying that because her fan-base is very passionate but they can also get hostile towards any critique or negative words about Christina. But in their defense people do say inappropriate stuff about her.
I wouldn't say that I'm disappointed either because when I first heard the lead single to the album, Your Body, I wasn't really impressed with it but I liked the confident and playful tone to the song. But then again, I don't really like the idea of anonymous sex.
In previous albums, Christina always put her personal mark on her albums and I kinda think that personal stamp has vanished into thin air. The album doesn't compliment Christina's vocals very well with the exception of the ballads because ballads are Christina's strong point. There are some notes where I felt that it wasn't the Christina I know and love that was singing. Lotus Intro reminds me of her electronic experiments in Bionic and I found it hard to enjoy her vocals in the intro.
All the songs are nice, but there's no originality. They don't stand out from the crowd. However on the plus side, the ballads are wonderful as I would expect in an album by Christina.
Army Of Me is the best song in the album for me. Her vocals are very toned down and I think the production is really done well here. If this song is not a single than I will eat my hat! It's modern, clean and has a nice swing to it. I know that Christina can pull some impressive notes and she does try really hard. Sometimes it can sound strained and over the top, but the vocals are deep and low down, so it sounds refreshing. I also find her collaboration with Sia, Blank Page very impressive because it's very delacate and easy on the ear.
Would I say that this is a good purchase? Even though I think the album lacks originality I can imagine that there will be a lot of people who would enjoy it. I think the album is worth getting if you enjoyed Kelly Clarkson and Rihanna's latest album efforts. It's a nice album, but that's my main problem with the album is that it is just a nice album, so I'm not sure sure if I would recommend as willingly as I did to some of her classic albums.
