Good Girl Gone Worse

Loud - Rihanna
Advantages: she has some good songs in there that she has not realised
Disadvantages: Not as good as good girl gone bad, her popular songs are rubbish
I am very controversial. I don't like Rihanna very much as I believe she has really taken it too far with some of her Music. I bought this for my mum for her birthday and have been having a little listen through it. I do feel that Rihanna has a very nice voice, and that some of her songs are catchy. Although generally I thought this album of hers was very weak and was a huge disappointed compared to "good girl gone bad".
I do like a lot of pop Music although I have noticed that the Music industry has declined a lot. Rihanna has brought out a lot of good songs but I am really not into her new Music at all. I have a love/hate relationship with this album and it has some highs and some lows.
Track 01 - S&M
This was clearly an attempt to shock the public and get a reaction, and it most certainly did. Really I don't see how this song is any different to any other old song in the Music industry full of sexual imagery. The only difference is she is very explicit in it. I thought there was such a lack of creativity in this song when she hits out with "sticks and stones may break my bones but chains and whips excite me". She did not create this phrase herself, I remember back in 2006 and some people has this phrase on Bebo skins etc. She really could have made up her own phrase instead of stealing one some teenager made up.
The song has a very dry beat and there really is no climax to the chorus. When listening, it is very hard to tell if this is the chorus or not, because it has the exact same beat as the verse. This makes the song pretty boring in a way, unless you listen to it because of the obscenity of the lyrics. I am one of those people aren't "against" the song as such but I don't like the idea of my oldest singing along to it, it's awkward when sitting with your dad and the song comes on, or even worse the video comes on.
This song gets a 4/10 for me.
Track 02 - What's my name?
This has a bit more of an exciting tune and I really like the chorus stating with "Hey boy, I really want to see if you can go down town with a girl like me". It features American rap sensation Drake who really does give it a more interesting touch to the song. Although he doesn't feature very much in it. The song is very repetitive and can get boring after a while, and the lyrics of "Oh na na, what's my name?", as well as the fact all the "oh na na"s get very annoying after a while. I can listen to this song for about one minute and the song goes off.
So a 6/10 for me I think
Track 03 - Cheers
This song wasn't realised but I think it is a lot more interesting than some of the ones that were interesting. It is quite slow and for some reason it reminds me of Avril Lavinge - I'm with you. I don't quite know why, but the tune to it is very interesting, and has a lot of repetition of "yeah, yeah"s but I think it makes it more catchy.
I think this is maybe a song that should have been released as opposed to S&M ... a 7/10 from me.
Track 04 - Fading
This is one of her slower songs that does have a very annoying Smurf noise in the background, as she is singing slowly you can hear the beautiful tune of her voice. The lyrics of the songs have a much deeper meaning to it. It a really relaxing song and maybe one that us ladies can relate to. I think Rihanna should bring out more music like this and fill her album with these sort of songs as opposed to some of the rubbish she brings out.
Track 04 - Only girl in the world.
Come on, admit it you've heard the song and it is very catchy. It has a very dance/disco tune in the background that really gets your feet moving. The beat sort of disappears during the chorus, which really builds a climax for the beat coming back and really just makes you want to dance.
Everyone has heard this song so I won't go into much detail about it.
Track 06 - California King Bed.
Another unheard of song that is a lot better than her other songs. It is a very slowly song, which sounds as if it is played against a single guitar, again allowing you to hear Rihanna's very beautiful tone in her voice. The chorus is a bit more upbeat when an electric guitar joins in. It is a really relaxing song that could be danced to very slowly by two people. I enjoy this song a lot and is probably one of my favourites on the album. The lyrics don't make much sense to me, I think it is about missing someone, but it certainly isn't a happy song. I was impressed with this song and I think it's a shame she is forced to bring out some of her rubbish sex-filled songs whilst her nicer songs are unheard of. Sort it out Rihanna!
Track 09 - Complicated
This is another nice song. The lyrics have a lot of meaning as she is saying what nearly everyone woman in saying "why do you make things so complicated?". I love her vocals in this song, especially in the chorus where she has to high some high notes. There is really no beat to this, it sounds as if it's played with a keyboard and a drum at some points, but it may as well be sung with no backing music.
Track 11 - Love the way you lie (part 2)
Many of us have heard part one of this song, with Eminem and Rihanna singing only the chorus. However, as much as I love Eminem, I prefer this version. Rihanna sings the verses and the chorus, and it sounds a lot sweeter. I think this has a better effect as you can really feel the emotions of the persona in the song explaining how she can't leave her abusive partner because she has some sort of sexual thrill from physical abuse. This caused a lot of shock, but as a person studying psychology, Rihanna is only speaking the truth about some woman. It can be offensive to people who have been in abuse relationships, so maybe this song shouldn't be listened to by these people.
Eminem does join in some point, singing with his violent persona. And thankfully there's no singing about tying anyone to beds and blowing houses up, but it appears to be two people who are both violent towards each other and not an abuser and a victim.
I think Rihanna's music is really going downhill in terms of the songs she realises, but in the album she has some hidden gems that really show her talent. I think she is allowing the industry to take too much control over her now and I prefer her old music.
The entire trak list are as followed:
