Advantages: something new

Disadvantages: one for the Dad's in places..

1997's 'Time Out of Mind' marked Bob Dylan's return to form, & 'Love & Theft' carries on, albeit in a completely different vein. If it's predecessor focused on dark subject matter, this album proves to be both loose & warm, & ranks among his better work.

It may not quite reach his 60's peak, but this is a very strong set of songs, with a loose production that allows the backing band room to breathe.

The range is impressive, with more up temp tracks followed by slower ballads, evoking an America that perhaps no one besides Dylan can see, and listening to his weekly radio show, it becomes even more apparent he lives in a slightly different place to the rest.

You'd have got long odds at one time of Dylan ever offering up a jaunty collection of rock & roll tunes, but that is what you find here, albeit tinged with darker elements, still, if you like latter day Dylan, this one is essential.

Summary: Dylan's still got it
