      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Third covers album.

      **Introduction**

Having seen Boyz II Men in concert a total of four times since April 2007 you could say that I am a pretty big fan of the group. When I heard the press releases about the new album they were recording being a bit different to what you might expect of them I was intrigued. The result was this collection of covers of a range of songs from several decades and styles. It's the third covers album they have recorded and the follow up to the hugely successful "Motown Hitsville USA" which was released in 2007.

      **Love**

Love features thirteen tracks which include covers of tracks by such artists as Journey, Take That, Lonestar, The Beatles, Sam Cooke, The Goo Goo Dolls and Cyndi Lauper to name but a few. The group again worked with Producer Randy Jackson after the huge success with their first collaboration with Motown Hitsville. Love was released on 14th November 2009 in the United Kingdom and you may have seen them in the days leading up to that date as they made appearances on TV and Radio to promote the new album.

      **My View**

"Back for Good" written by Gary Barlow.

This was one of Take That's biggest hits and was originally released in 1995. This version has a similar sound with slight changes which in my opinion improve the song. This is a very flowing cover version of one of Take That's better tracks. This track gets the album off to a fine start with a very catchy feel. Good stuff

"Could it Be I'm falling in love" written by Melvin & Mervin Steals.

This was originally recorded by The Spinners, This up to date version takes what's good about the original like the horn section and feel and adds the Boyz II Men stamp on things with their smooth catchy vocal harmonies. This is a very flowing version which has some great vocal licks during the chorus. Good stuff.

"If you leave me now" written by Peter Cetera

This Chicago classic has been reworked with a more soulful vibe. I'm sure all of you will know the original, This cover is in my opinion even better than the original, It works so well with their smooth vocal harmonies and each individual vocal part. Another very well done cover to start the album off with.

"Amazed" written by Marv Green, Aimee Mayo and Chris Lindsey.

Everyone has their favourite songs from bands or artists they aren't all that keen on and this is one of my favourites like that. What Nathan, Shawn and Wanya have done on this version is keep the emotion of Lonestar's original and surrounded it with gorgeous vocal harmonies and have well and truly made their mark on the song. Brilliant.

"I Can't make you love me" Written by Mike Reid & Allen Shamblin

This is one of the best reworking's they have done, This is a really beautiful cover of this classic song originally recorded by Bonnie Raitt who they worked with on Motown Hitsville. This is a clear indication of the vocal talent of these guys. deeply emotive and deeply affecting. Lovely lovely version.

"Time after Time" Written by Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman

This is one of Cyndi Lauper's most well known tracks and what Boyz II Men have done with this one is extraordinary. They open with a soulful acapella which leads into the fabulous kick beat which works so effectively alongside the awesome vocal talent of the trio. Absolutely Brilliant. I think the sign of a great cover is the artist reworking it to make it their own and boy have they done that on this one.

      "Iris" written by John Rzeznik

This is one of the more unexpected covers on the album, Who would have expected them to cover The Goo Goo Dollls?? This is however one of the best songs they chose. It really works well with the backing strings and gentle guitar. I love the way the music moves into each members vocal part. This is another indication of their talent for reinventing a song and making it their own.

      "Cupid" written by Sam Cooke

Sadly Sam Cooke was taken from the world before his talent was realised. This however is a great tribute to his legacy. This is a really flowing cover of one of his most well known tracks. Brilliantly constructed and sung. Superbly catchy too with a great breakdown towards the end which shows off their sublime vocal harmonies.

"Shining Star" written by Leo Graham

This Manhattans original gets the reworking treatment yet still keeps the emotion of the song. I must say that although it was a decent track I was not overly keen on the original but this is another very good cover version which has a nice flow and is sung very well indeed.

"In my Life" written by Lennon & McCartney

This is a Beatles classic which has lovingly been reworked here. This is another brilliant reworking of a classic track. This version is quite different from the original and in my opinion it's even more emotive. A short yet very effective track. Brilliant stuff.

"Open Arms" written by Steve Perry, Jonathan Cain

This version of the Journey classic was the first track I heard from the album and I was hooked instantly. The original is a great song but they somehow make this even better. This is a stonkingly good version which really shows off their incredible vocal talent, especially Wanya's bit. This makes me wonder what they have up their sleeves for the next album.

"When I fall in love" written by Victor Young, Edward Heyman

This is one of the most recorded songs of all time with mostly duets but the original was actually sung by Doris Day. I am glad to say that Michael Buble actually does a decent job on this version and this is a slow, smooth collaboration which really pulls you in. Probably the weakest original version from these songs.

"Misty Blue" written by Bob Montgomery

This was written in 1966 but my memory of this song was the incredible version done on Fame Academy by Paris Campbell Edwards. Boyz II Men have matched that with a brilliant version with all three on top form. The harmonies are brilliant and top the overall emotion of the song. Brilliant stuff.

      **Overall**

This is the third cover album from Boyz II Men and this is just as good as Motown Hitsville. It may not have as many classics but the reworkings are just as good. I agree with Randy Jackson when he says Boyz II Men just keep getting better and better. This is a fabulous album and proves they have many many more great years of productivity in them. Best songs on the album are Open Arms, Amazed, I Can't make you love me, In My Life, Time after time and Misty Blue.
