Advantages: good tunes
Disadvantages: Her earlier music was better
Love & Life is a comprehensive overview of Diana Ross's 40-year music career crammed onto a single double-length CD. In keeping with the title, some 21 tracks are grouped according to either Life or Love. In truth, they could have been filed under the good, the bad and the ugly. But that's not to say that the good doesn't by far surpass its less desirable counterparts. It does...easily! In all honesty, the hits have dried up for Ms Ross of late, but there is much earlier stuff of merit here. All the early Holland-Dozier-Holland penned Supremes hits are here and form a catalogue of Motown's greatest in their own right. The 60s tune Baby Love, Where Did Our Love Go, Stop in the Name of Love and You Keep Me Hangin' On will roll off the tongue. And there are so many more. Fast-forward to the 1970s and Ross recorded a succession of timeless love songs ? Touch Me in the Morning, I'm Still Waiting and Do You Know Where You're Going To? Are just the beginning. Even the 80s spawned the Lionel Richie duet Endless Love and upbeat Chain Reaction. It was not until recently that Ross seemed to lose her way and persevered with sickly sweet love songs, formulaic balladry and even some ill-judged experimentations with dance. But it's all here. Enjoy the classics and reach for the fast forward button where necessary.
