"Love Gun" is the 6th studio album by American hard rockers, Kiss. It was released in 1977 on Casablanca Records and produced by the band with Eddie Kramer. The line-up for the album was Paul Stanley (vocals/guitar), Ace Frehley (guitar/vocals), Gene Simmons (bass/vocals) and Peter Criss (drums/vocals).
The album is noted for a couple firsts for the band and a last for the band. It is the first album to feature all four members in lead vocals, and also marks the first lead vocal performance by Ace Frehley on an album. It is also the last studio album where all four of the original members played on every track.
"Shock Me" has a relaxed yet powerful feel with biting drums, steady guitar riffs and an amazing solo from Ace Frehley. The vocals are astounding. Although the lyrics are about something else entirely, it is said the song comes from Ace nearly being electrocuted while on the "Rock and Roll Over" tour.
With Paul Stanley on lead vocals, title track "Love Gun" is a mix of hard rock and a little touch of pop. Hard pounding drum beats can be likened to machine gun fire, adding to the heavy feel of the surging guitar riffs. The melody of the song, however, has a bit of a pop feel. The two blend together to make a brilliant song that is easily recognizable from the first few notes.
Quite easily one of my favourite Kiss albums, "Love Gun" is not only great musically, but proves just how amazing the band was in the original lineup. While it has been great since with other members, the original magic can be felt on this album. I can easily recommend this one to any rock fan.
