Advantages: Every track tells a story, fantastic lyrics.
Disadvantages: She is very much underrated.
A friend who introduced me to the album "Love in the time of science" claimed that Emiliana Torrini was the new, hipper and more credible version of that Icelandic popstrel Bjork. I'm not a fan of Bjork - in fact I find her voice rather irritating but I can't knock her because there is no doubt she is talented. However, my friend was right. Emiliana is the new improved model. Despite her name suggesting otherwise, Emiliana is herself Icelandic and no doubt drew on Bjork for a source of inspiration when writing this album. She is very big in Europe but her debut release has been virtually unnoticed in the UK - a shame in fact becuase in this reviewers opinion, she is a most fantastic talent. "Once in a house on a hill" sings Emiliana as the album opens up, "a boy grew angry, he broke into my heart. For a day and a night, I stayed beside him, until there was no hope." The words are expresed with such a unique charm that it is almost impossible to resist. You can't help but notice the lyrics unlike other artists where the words just seem to pass you by simply because they don't mean anything. In each track, Emiliana tells a thought provoking and interesting story which leaves you thinking. This album is what I call a proper album. Every song is fantastic. Particularly "Wednesday's Child" among others. Every song here could be a number one single. Her voice is a very young sounding but haunting instrument which wouldn't necessarily strike you as a fantastic singing voice - it's just the way she sings them and the lyrics she employs. The paino and the electric guitar are big features on the album and that should give you a hint as to the range of songs Miss Torrini pleasures us with. Some songs are dark, some are haunting, some are personal, some are light hearted but all left me in a state of relaxation and pleasure.
In fact I could almost say that the album is one complete story broken down into different chapters, it needs to be heard and you will undoubtedly be impressed. I had the pleasure of seeing Emiliana Torrini perform live on the television but unfortunately her talents were wasted on the CD:UK audience. They were all Steps and A1 fans who simply couldn't appreciate the depth of Emiliana's lyrics. Miss Torrini is young and has plenty more opportunities to have her voice heard and appreciated and I don't doubt that she will one day be very big indeed. Not just in her native Iceland or Europe but all over the world as her music breaks boundries and would tell a story to people who don't even understand English. I urge you to listen to Emiliana Torrini, if this doesn't convince you then download some MP3 tracks from the internet - then I guarantee you'll be convinced. I am very much looking forward to seeing her perform live and I will give all of you here at Dooyoo, a full and comprehensive review of what is guaranteed to be a fantastic gig. All your comments are welcome and appreciated. Happy Listening!!

- 03/03/01 I downloaded a few songs from napster off this album before deciding to buy it, however I'm very glad I did. Her voice took a little getting used to, however once I did I found it a great album, especially for relaxing to. |
