If not quite the Holy Grail we were led to believe it was in the months leading to its eventual release, Ryan Adams' fourth (official) L.P (not counting the excellent demo round-up Demolition) is still a stunning, deeply affecting collection featuring a fair chunk of the ridiculously prolific songwriter's best work. An excessively maudlin, reverb-soused affair, Lost Highway famously balked at the idea of putting the album out at all - a situation to which Adams responded by cobbling together the rushed, pastiche-heavy Rock N Roll (a throwaway - if fun, and sorely underrated - record).
