      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Disappointing, indeed.

A compilation of Cradle of Filth's greatest hits would probably lead you to believe you were going to be blown away by some sensational guitar riffs accompanied by chest pounding drums and ear drum shredding screams from the Filth himself, i'm afraid to say you would be probably be disappointed if this is what you were expecting.

Disc one is consistent of songs torn straight off of albums from their time with Music For Nations, and disc two is just extra tracks and some limited editions of tracks from their previous releases with MFN.

I have to say i didn't enjoy this album very much at all, with a lot of emphasis going into the lyrical content as opposed to the quality of the music in the songs it kind of made me feel slightly disappointed. Having said that there are a few tracks which will definitely live on as their greatest, songs such as 'Her Ghost In The Fog' and 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' (probably the best cover of an Iron Maiden song ever) really step up the mark for this genre of music. Side by side with songs like 'Dusk And Her Embrace' and 'Lord Abortion' it makes for a very good little playlist for your ipod, but really nothing more.

Ok, so here is the track listing for both discs:

      Disc 1 (Lovecraft)

Creatures That Kissed in Cold Mirrors
      Dusk and Her Embrace
      Beneath the Howling Stars
      Her Ghost in the Fog
      Funeral in Carpathia
      The Twisted Nails of Faith
      From the Cradle to Enslave
      Saffron's Curse
      Malice Through the Looking Glass
      Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids
      Lord Abortion

      Disc 2 (Witch Hearts)

      Once Upon Atrocity
      Thirteen Autumns and a Widow
      For Those Who Died
      Sodomy and Lust
      Twisting Further Nails
      Amor E Morte
      Carmilla's Masque
      Lustmord and Wargasm II
      Dawn of Eternity
      Of Dark Blood and Fucking
      Dance Macabre
      Hell Awaits
      Hallowed Be Thy Name

As you can see this is a lot more songs than the ones i've pointed out, which kind of goes to show the quality of this album. What was supposed to be a greatest hits really turned out to be nothing more than a randomly generated mass of generic 'dark' metal songs with a couple of tasty sprinkles thrown in the mix.

All in all, i wouldn't recommend this album for anybody, unless you're really into that sort of thing.

      Disadvantages

      Compilation (2002).

Cradle of Filth's popularity escalated as their music became more predictable and less imaginative, once again demonstrating the mediocre tastes of the masses (even those who misleadingly fancy themselves as alternative by reading such obscure publications as 'Kerrang!'), and 2002 saw several releases cashing in on this mainstream success in wont of a proper studio album.

'Lovecraft & Witchhearts' is an unashamed best-of compilation bulked out by some rare and unreleased material in the form of remixes and cover songs, and I'll admit that it's quite a good collection. Its avoidance of the band's earliest material is disappointing, but it fortunately doesn't include anything from the awful 'Bitter Suites to Succubi' release that would have decreased its quality immensely - presumably this is more due to record label issues than artistic choice.

The main problem here is that it's a fairly lifeless collection, jumping between eras and styles without grace and missing out some of the better examples of the styles on offer, preferring to insert a more modern equivalent when possible. It's still a fair representation of the band, especially at this point in its career before their sound deviated even further, but the cover songs on the second disc aren't particularly impressive, and even the remixes are lacking any real delights - the remastering of 'Thirteen Autumns and a Widow' doesn't even fix the shoddy production of the original.

This is fine as a collection of fairly arbitrary Cradle of Filth songs, but I'd still only recommend checking out the earlier portion of their discography.
