Advantages: There are only twelve tracks.
Disadvantages: All twelve of these tracks lack energy and excitement.
'Lovehatetragedy' is the third studio album from Papa Roach, the bands second major label album release and one that I personally find to be incredibly disappointing. The bands major label debut 'Infest' is no great album, this second major label album release from the band is even weaker however and saw a severe dip in musical quality for Papa Roach. The bands 'Infest' album consists of a number of excellent nu-metal tracks, 'Lovehatetragedy' does however possess nowhere near as much quality as the bands breakthrough record. Twelve tracks feature here and this provides for 42 minutes of music.
As soon as you listen to this album what you notice here is that the rapped Papa Roach vocals of old are now long gone, the band instead sticks to clearly sung out vocals; a bold move for Papa Roach, a really quite unsuccessful one however. Whereas with the bands 'Infest' album the choruses are often incredibly infectious, here there is absolutely none of that and the album therefore progresses really rather blandly.
'She Loves Me Not' and 'Time and Time Again' were both released commercially as singles from this album, neither are particularly great however and certainly not so strong as the singles that were released from the bands 'Infest' album. 'She Loves Me Not' has a fairly interesting chorus, the track lacks energy however and this is something that is true of every single track on this album. The music lacks life, it seems here as though the band had really run out of ideas at this point and didn't know where to progress next with the sound. 'She Loves Me Not' is actually the only track on this album which features rapped vocals, they're not very well executed however and here both vocally and instrumentally also the music fails to ever really spark.
As well as coming complete with eleven original tracks, the twelfth track on this album is actually a cover of the Pixies 'Gouge Away'. This one ends the album fairly interestingly, it's not a great cover but the band does here does a fairly decent job of injecting a little lease of new life into the track. By the time the end of the album is reached the tracks have long since blended into one, it's nice to hear the band doing something a little bit different here and trying out a track originally recorded by another artist.
If you're after an exciting album of nu-metal then Papa Roach's 2002 effort 'Lovehatetragedy' isn't really the place to look. Instrumentally the music is incredibly lacking and vocally also the music is really quite uninspiring. The tracks all sound incredibly similar, there's a lack of energy present here and 'Lovehatetragedy' is therefore not a particularly exciting album to listen to. The bands major label breakthrough 'Infest' was most definitely a better album than this, 'Lovehatetragedy' is an album which has really very little to offer and I personally would most definitely not recommend this album to anyone.
Summary: 'Lovehatetragedy' is a nu-metal album you should really steer well clear of listening to.
