Advantages: Definitely quite unique, some awesome sounds

Disadvantages: Doesn't appeal much to non dance fans like me

Low Life was originally a 1999 album by Layo & Bushwacka, now I'm not a big fan of dance music so I approached this album with caution. Whilst I wouldn't listen to it on a regular basis, it's definitely something that I don't mind having in the background in a club or something.

The album is quite varied and it's as far from thumping trance as you will find, Low Life would probably classed as house and it has a really progressive party atmosphere to it. For me, it's a little too much to listen to the whole album at once but avid house fans will have no problems getting stuck into it.

One of the best tracks is "Deep South" which has quite a funky sort of afro beat and hints of jazzyness, in Layo & Bushwacka fashion it seems that the song becomes more complicated as it goes on, there's a real carnival feeling to this song. The vocals are cool, a kind of cross between Aretha Franklin and Moby!

The other major hit of the album is Dead Man Walking - Original but perhaps the most original and ambitious piece of work is "Ear Candy" which is long and extremely progressive and could be labelled as chill out, the drum beat is awesome throughout and the pace of the song changes so regularly that it gives the listener a feeling of exploration! It also starts to get pretty psychedelic at times.

If you are in to dance music then this album is definitely rather on the original side. Some of these songs would also make awesome soundtracks to spy films!
