Advantages: Nicely written, great voice
Disadvantages: A bit depressing maybe
Florence and The Machine are a British band who have recently became pretty well known to music lovers thanks to performances at various festivals and exposure on T.V.
I became aware of this band after seeing one of their performances on T4, and was blown away by the vocal talent of the lead singer so rushed to buy this album, Lungs, as soon as it was released in July this year.
The album contains the following tracks:
1. "Dog Days Are Over"
2. "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)"
3. "I'm Not Calling You a Liar"
4. "Howl"
5. "Kiss with a Fist"
6. "Girl with One Eye"
7. "Drumming Song"
8. "Between Two Lungs"
9. "Cosmic Love"
10. "My Boy Builds Coffins"
11. "Hurricane Drunk"
12. "Blinding"
13. "You've Got the Love"
My favorite tracks are the following:
KISS WITH A FIST
This was the first single released from the album so I had heard it previously. The lyrics are about a couple fighting (I think) and are good to sing along to.
The style would be described as Indie I suppose, with Florence's unusual voice really adding soul to the music.
DOG DAYS ARE OVER
This is another single so again I recognized it. The tune of this one is very up and down, and Florence's voice is shown off by using lots of range and style.
I could be wrong, but it seems she is singing about the beginning of some good times and the end of the bad times.
I'M NOT CALLING YOU A LIAR
This is a slower track which keeps the same pace throughout. A bit more chilled out than some of the others but the lyrics are lovely and interesting to hear.
GIRL WITH ONE EYE
This is a strange one as the lyrics are so odd and sort of uncomfortable but mesmerizing at the same time.
The music is beautiful and her voice , again, is outstanding.
Overall, I find this album very different and interesting to listen to. Out of 13 tracks, I like eight of them a lot, the others I find a little bit too slow for my taste.
Although, out of the tracks that I like, there are at least four that I love and would listen to again and again.
What I like most is the voice of the singer as it is very unusual, striking and recognisable.
The music is also beautifully played.
I find that I have to be in a certain mood to listen to this album as some of the lyrics are slightly depressing - about death or violence - however I appreciate that it is wonderfully written and performed.
Recommended.
Summary: Great album when you're in the right mood for it.

- 10/08/09 Haha- I love this album too- was blown away similarly by her appearance on Johnathon Ross, but literally all the tracks you have selected as your favourite (bar dog-days) are all the ones I don't like! Lol- guess that's what makes the world a more interesting place! Nice review :) |

- 10/08/09 I think Florence rips off so many successful female artists, especially Kate Bush, but I love Drumming and Rabbit Heart. |
