Advantages: Good mix of musical styles, Funky, cheeky and has a bit of "atti-tood"

Disadvantages: Some dull songs

'M!ssundaztood' is quite a different album compared to some of the others in my collection.
I surprised myself in actually liking 'Get The Party Started' the first time I heard it. As for a whole album, I had this idea that it would be too mainstream /pop / R'n'B for my taste, particulary when I thought back to previous Pink songs. So one day, when I was really in the mood to hear something new, I saw 'M!ssundaztood' on a listening post and was instantly impressed!
Pink, according to her bio on her website, met up with new producers who she's never worked with before. That's probably why this album has a few styles all mingling together. One producer, Darryl "someone?" (sorry I can't quite remember his name right now) is established in R'n'B and Linda Perry has to have a more rocky, alternative edge. Perry also co-writes many of the songs here and plays a lot of instruments. Some people will remember Linda Perry from the song "What's Going On?" from a few years back. She was the lead singer with 4 Non Blondes and has an absolutely magnificent, belting, strong voice. She used to wear a big hat to match her voice too! =)

'Get The Party Started' is the song that gets this album started. I'm sure everyone knows it well so I'll leave it at that. It's a good up tempo party song, it just seems really short when you hear it in the context of this album but nevermind. I only know the singles from Pink's previous album, and in comparision with this single I'd say this is album is some of the best work she's done in her short career.
'18 Wheeler' has a great thumping, slow beat. It's a great song, basically about how you can try to run Pink over with an 18 wheeler truck...and she won't give a F*£$ . It's a nice song about doing your own thing, a great motto for anyone to have! The only thing that really irritates me abo
ut this song is the way she doesn't actually use the F-word. In my opinion, everybody knows what word she has in mind, so why not just use it - and if you must, put a parental advisory sticker on the front. *sigh*

The title track to this album is a brilliant boppy little song, almost like a kind of poem sung to music.
It makes me smile with it's stuttery boppy beats, and the end of the song is hilarious. Pink indulges in some grimacing groans and there's a reference to "X Lax", an American laxative.
'Dear Diary' has a brilliant trippy beat with a nice guitar riff. It's quite an emotive song but it's just got this lovely velvety tune. It's the tune that really got me into this song.
'Eventually' and 'Family Portrait' are the most R'n'B tinged songs here. 'Eventually' is slow, but has a lovely tune. I used to skip it at first, but after a few listens you like it more and its an good song to relax to.
'Family Portrait' is one I always skip. I just can't get into it. 'Misery' features Stephen Tyler (Aerosmith) on guest vocals and it's a dreadfully plodding piece of American cliche-soft rock.
I always skip this one I'm afraid. It's not written by Pink or Linda Perry; and boy does it show!
'Numb' is the most rocking song on the album. Great punchy guitars and a really catchy chorus. You can imagine an audience just jumping manically up and down at a gig. 'Just Like A Pill' is your regular pleasant pop song with a very catchy chorus!

'Don't Let Me Get Me' is one you'll all know by now. It seems to have done well in the charts and I think it deserved to. It's very catchy and bouncy and has some funny lyrics. "Never win first place, don't support the team, I can't take direction and my socks are never clean"
And Pink really shouldn't worry because she is defi
netely better than Britney Spears!

'Lonely Girl' is wonderful tune. Linda Perry does fantastic vocals on the chorus as she asks "do you even know who you are?" You can also hear how powerful Pinks voice can be as the song closes.
'My Vietnam' is a bit slow to start off. It's got a good tune but something I can't quite put my finger on makes me dislike this song. Although Linda Perry does a stonking version of 'Star Spangled Banner' on electric guitar as the song fades. As good as Hendrix believe it or not! I think personally, maybe I'm wrong, this song just seems a bit dodgy or something, comparing trivial things with Vietnam.

My copy of the album has an extra track called 'Catch 22'. It's a brilliant, catchy tune with some rap style singing and zippy drum programming. It also has spoken sections that copy the inflight safety demo you hear when you go on a plane. It's a novel way to start a song by saying "welcome aboard...please ensure your seats are in the upright position for take-off and landing" etc. We are also told to "take care when retrieving belongings from the overhead lockers, as they may fall on you and knock you the f$*@ out." So be warned!

In all, this album is excellent. It's not really ground breaking stuff, but it's got accomplished and catchy tunes, a mix of styles, good lyrics and very listenable. Pink's lyrics tend to be about being individual and doing your own thing. A refreshing thing when it sometimes seems the world is full of sheep that follow the trends of everyone else!
I like this album when I just want to hear something a bit fun and light. It's a bit out of place along with my U2, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, Rolling Stones etc...but that's why I like it really, it's something different. I'd recommend it to anyone who remotely liked Pink's singles. If you did, you definetely wo
n't be disappointed.

And remember - we're all pink on the inside!
