Advantages: original style, real lyrics

Disadvantages: -

I love my music and particularly like new talent, something really different and original. A friend of mine recommended the singer Kate Nash to me and so I had a listen on her Myspace page. By seeing a photo of her I was quite shocked when I heard her sing as she has a similar style to Lily Allen in the sense that she sings with her typical London accent. Kate Nash is only 20 years old and is doing well at the minute; she is playing a lot of the recent summer festivals and has done well in the UK charts with her song ‘Foundations’.

Kate was rejected by the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and days later fell down stairs, breaking her foot. During the recovery she found herself content with writing song words. Kate uploaded her music onto MySpace and found herself a manager which would take her career further. What I really found I liked most about this album is it made me smile. I could relate to the song lyrics as they are so down to earth it’s unreal. She tells stories in every song and you cannot skip as you want to follow it on even if only for the lyrics. Some of the lyrics are also like conversations she is saying and the music style is quite old fashioned sounding but it is different.

2. FOUNDATIONS: This song has a very relaxed feel to it. The music has a quick pace and the lyrics fit in with the rhythm. The singing isn’t amazing but at the chorus the narrative like lyrics turns into a really nice singing voice with a slight bit of an accent coming through still but she can sing. The song is about a couple not getting on and the little things that annoy one another. It is about trying to hold onto something even though it is rocky at that time. Such lyrics like ‘You say I must eat so many lemons ‘cos I am so bitter, I said I’d rather be with your friends mate they are much fitter’ show how real the lyrics are but also this is amusing and cleverly written. The video to this is quite arty too and her expression in it all makes me laugh. This song got to Number 2 in the UK charts and did really well.

3. MOUTHWASH: At first when seeing this title I wasn’t expecting a lot but this is one of my favourite songs off the album and is meant to be the next single. It starts with a slow but upbeat piano piece, the singing is sung in paused lines. I really like how experimental Kate’s voice is in this song she doesn’t sing every word as it should be typically delivered but breaks up the words and adds more interest into them. The chorus builds up a bit ‘and I’m singing uh-oh on a Friday night’ is catchy and the most commonly used line in this song. I think this song is about her just explaining that she is a real girl just like everyone else, has her individual features and does stay in on Friday’s and drinks tea. I like the chorus lyrics ‘I use mouthwash, sometimes I floss, I got a family and I drink lots of tea’ it is just showing the listeners she is down to earth. This song should do well as her next single; it is definitely one of the stronger songs on the album.

6. WE GET ON: This song reminds me of something from an older TV show or a musical. The piano piece plays along repetitively but I don’t think this song needed strong music as the story is being told along in the words to this and you need to listen. She reaches some higher notes in this song and it works really well. I like this song every one can relate to her story. It is about her liking someone and sort of creating a fantasy that she thinks they would get on if he knew her properly, she likes him but then he kisses someone else and it hurts her. The song portrays true emotions like her friends saying ‘you’ll get someone better’ then her saying ‘so I proceeded to get drunk and to cry locked myself in the toilets the entire night’ . It is a song which displays a typical situation we have all gone through which is quite sad but with an upbeat musical background and her singing really adds to the feeling.

I won’t go too much into description of the album as it really is one you need to pick up yourself and have a listen to. It is number 1 in the album chart at the minute and can be purchased from Amazon at £8.99 which is quite good. I recommend this album to those looking for new talent or fans of her song Foundations or Lily Allen fans or lastly anyone who likes to see something different and a good British singer. She is young and talented and is bringing something different to the music industry.

It seems silly to apologise for a 'Useful' rating, but just to explain why it wasn't a maximum...

Fir stly, there's a lot of focus on lyrics but I'm not so sure what this actually sounds like. I guess it's fairly typical female singer-songwriter stuff, but your musical references leave me confused (I wouldn't consider Lily Allen to sound 'old-fashioned').

Secondly, while I like the way you pick a few tracks rather than drone repetitively through every song, I'd want to know more about the rest of the album. Is it a few good songs and lots of filler? Just one or two tracks you don't like? Much variation in style?

Those points aside, I thought it was actually a very good review - it can be hard to write about music, but I think you do it very well.

The lemon lyric makes me cringe. Not sure about her as I pigeonholed her as a Lily Allen clone. maybe i might investigate
