Good music but the band improved

Malevolent Rapture is the debut album by Dutch thrash/death metal band Legion of the Damned, a band I recently came across and one that I quickly started litening to their discography.

Malevolent Rapture is noticeably more raw than later releases and whilst I wouldn't say that they hadn't found their sound at this time, they definitely hadn't perfected it yet. The drumming for one is far too basic, using pretty much the same drum beat throughout the album and adding very little to pockets of extreme metal goodness. Maurice Swinkels has an excellent voice, when it comes to this genre there are a lots of bands who are nearly impossible to make out and despite being one of the best growl and grunters in the business, Swinkels is audible 99% of the time and there's no struggling to make out what he's singing about, you'd also never guess he wasn't a native speaker of English.

Legion of the Damned also tend to sing about dark occult themes rather than go for gore or pure evil topics (this may be arguable depending on your religious views mind!), lyrically this band remind me of early Sabbath.
