Premium Review Malevolent Rapture - Legion of the Damned: Cool debut album from Legion of the Damned (241 words)

Rating:

Malevolent Rapture is the debut album by Dutch thrash/death metal band Legion of the Damned, a band I recently came across and one that I quickly started litening to their discography. Malevolent Rapture is noticeably more raw than later releases and whilst I wouldn't say that they hadn't found their sound at this time, they definitely hadn't perfected it yet. The drumming for one is far too basic, using pretty much the same drum beat throughout the album and adding very little to pockets of extreme metal goodness. Powerplant - Gamma Ray
Continues the classic metal sound. Almost entirely derivative of itself and other bands.

Somewhere Out In Space - Gamma Ray
Classic speed metal, finally escaping the Helloween comparison. Cheesy lyrics and dated sound, but for me this is a bonus.

Victory Songs - Ensiferum
More fun folk metal. Runs ideas into the ground.

Eld - Enslaved
Continues to evolve Viking metal in a perfect fusion with black metal. First song steals thunder from the others.

Jaktens Tid - Finntroll
Highly inventive, a perfect balance between polka and black metal elements. Can seem ludicrous at first.

Iron - Ensiferum
More energetic. Still not enormously varied.

Crimson - Edge Of Sanity
Bold and varied death metal epic. Too sprawling and changeable.

Nothing But Death Remains - Edge Of Sanity
Great example of the early Swedish death metal sound. Few original ideas, and lacking individuality.

The Spectral Sorrows - Edge Of Sanity
Talented death metal with a nice melodic angle. Concessions towards accessibility are mostly disappointing.

Dragonheads - Ensiferum
Nice side helping for folk metal fans. Doesn't offer much original material.
