      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Excellent mix of doomy rock/metal and soaring gothic vocals

Female-fronted gothic metal is normally something I wouldnt touch with a bargepole, but the Gathering's '1995 release 'Mandylion' is an album I'm more than willing to make an exception for. The music is a mix of lethargic, 80s-tinged rock mixed in with subtle doom-death/shoegaze influences (think old Anathema and Katatonia), with some truley memorable and really rather beautiful gothic female vocals with a distinct Kate Bush feel to them courtesy of frontwoman Silje Wergeland.

The songs are engaging and catchy without being poppy, and the album is a very relaxing and laid back listen that, whilst great to sit and give your undivided attention to also works extremely well as subtle background music too. It's a melancholy yet still very uplifting listen, and towards the end of the album there is an excellent, rather primordial sounding track with wind instruments and tribal drums that works brilliantly in conjunction with the rocky/doomy formula, the album flowing naturally from one song to another and making for nerly an hour of unpretentious, highly immersive gothic-tinged rock/metal.
