'Marathonnerre I' was released in 1993 during an uncharacteristically stable ... more ... era for the group rounded off by Patricia Dallio, and this stability and newfound confidence unfortunately seems to work to the music's disadvantage; although much of the trademark Art Zoyd sound is still here, the whole thing seems much more tame and bland, and a lot of it is frankly boring.
Originally composed for some form of performance piece - ballet, art or something else, I forget - it's to be expected that this won't be riveting, edge-of-the-seat music drawing too much attention to itself, but allegedly edited...more |

French avant-garde performers Art Zoyd first came to my attention many years ago through their distinctly odd film score to the Eureka DVD release of F. W. Murnau's vampire classic 'Nosferatu,' and although its dark and blaring electronic themes didn't provide the most suitable score (I later updated to a far superior imported version, because I'm just that much of a connoisseur), it made enough of an impact to stay in my memory. It turns out that Art Zoyd have been composing music for quite some considerable time, and have experienced numerous line-up changes that have seen Gérard Hourbette and Thierry Zaboitzeff remaining as the only core members. ...
