'Mardraum' (Norwegian for 'Nightmare') is a truly excellent album to beckon in a new millennium and new stage of Enslaved's career, but even for all its technical and creative virtuosity, there's something holding this album back from true greatness. It doesn't really sound like anything else, not even the other progressive black metal acts out there such as Axamenta, but when the style fails to gel in a coherent or satisfying manner, the reasons for its uniqueness start to become obvious. Fortunately, the band would continue to reinvent itself with every release, keeping each album distinct and preventing the style from becoming stale. One issue I have with ...
