Advantages: fine tracks
Disadvantages: the childrens' song
I watched this film the other night and it reminded me of two things. Firstly, their need to burst into song every five minutes and also how catchy some of the songs actually are. You will find yourself humming them for days on end, much to your frustration.
The singing is mainly handled by the leads, namely Julie Andrews, Dick van Dyk, David Tomlinson and Glynis John.
The album gets off to a rousing start with Tomlinson delivering a pompous number in the form of 'The Life I Lead.' His upperclass tongue makes the track stand out and the lyrics are quite baffling and odd, but it is rather amusing.
'Perfect Nanny' sung by the children is way too sickly and creepy and it makes my skin crawl. It might be alright if you're seven years old, but I find it just too overbearing and false.
'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious' is much more fun, as Andrews wraps her tongue around some of the most ridiculous words ever. Her timing is superb though and she whizzes through the track like a concorde, firing off the lyrics with no lapses of judgement.
'I Love To Laugh' is enlightening for a minute, before the joke wears thin. Yes, they like to laugh, point taken. But this is overkill and you won't be laughing by the end, you will be pulling your hair out, begging them to be miserable!
One of the best songs is 'Feed The Birds (Tuppence A Bag)' which has a shockingly sombre streak running through it. The chords will make you tremble and Andrews' delicate delivery will bring a tear to the eye. It is quite charming. On a similar note, 'Chim Chim Cheree' has something infinitely sad about it, it makes you feel all ghostly.
The album lifts your spirits again though, as 'Let's Go Fly A Kite' restores the happy balance and will have you skipping merrily along without a care in the world.
This is a fine album and a must for fans of the film. The cover artwork is also quite delicious.
