Advantages: it raises your spirit
Disadvantages: none
For me the album "Masque" is simply great. This recording shows how this sensitive band can produce different type of music and they prove that they can create any kind of music they want without sound superficial or just for being influenced by whatīs "hip" at the moment. I have all the records by the Mission and in every one or them I can find surprises. My oppinion is that their music is out of this world!!! Unfortunately this recording was misunderstood and underrated by people who are narrow-minded and didnīt want to change their habitual kind of music they were accustomed of. It was a challenge for them and they chose the easy way by saying "no, we don't like it", simple isnīt it? The Mission started as a Gothic band in 1986 after two members of it left The Sisters of Mercy. These members were founder/singer/writer/guitarrist Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams. Both contributed to make the sensational Sisters album "First and Last and Always" now considered as a Gothic jewel. Their first record now as The Mission "God's Own Medicine" (another gothic jewel) is still into the Gothic sound but after several albums they changed style. This album "Masque" is a magnificient sample ot this change. For me the highlights are "Never Again", "Shades of Green" (part ll), "Even you may Shine" ,"Like a Child Again", "Who will love me tomorrow" "You make me Breath", "Until thereīs another Sunrise". All these songs have great instrumentation, unusual guitar arrangements (so unusual that Martin Gore from Depeche Mode asked Wayne how he did it). I would also recommend their Cd single "Shades of Green" which contains the following remixes: "Shades of Green" (7" remix), "Sticks and Stones" (casbah mix) "Trail of Scarlet" (guitar mix), "You make me Breath" (the barn m
ix). For people who like different/exotic music they may like the songs "Stick and Stones" that has an Arabian sound (they hired a special Arabian artist named Aboud Abdel just for this song) and the song "She conjures me Wings" with lots of trumpets. Some or you may ask where the "Shades of Green" part I is. Well it is in the "Never Again" 7" under the name of "Beautiful Chaos", the band reworked this song and named it "Shades of Green"(part ll)

- 18/04/01 I really enjoy this album as well(its just strangely atypical, 'is all); its well-produced, gorgeously executed & Waynes really starting to
come-of-age as a songwriter. It DOES boggle the mind, though... I wouldn't necessarily say I,or others, were being close-minded to it. I, for one, just
thought the band should concentrate on their strong-points, thats all.
Good opinion. |
