Advantages: Great production, excellent tunes and upbeat overall
Disadvantages: Although it has varied style, reggae is the main one so maybe it won't appeal to some listeners
Finley Quaye's debut album was well recieved in the music press when it was released in 1997. I remember a lot of music critics singing it's praises and it was well deserved. It opens with the dub/reggae sound of 'Ultra Stimulation' and this sets the pace for the rest of the album. Quaye is heavily influenced by reggae. But other styles mingle into the songs. "Sunday Shining" is a little more guitar based. 'It's Great When We're Together" is extremely soulful and this track is where Quaye's voice really stands out the most. 'Your Love Gets Sweeter' has a bluegrass/cajun sound and other songs delve into hip hop with very heavy bass, calypso and instrumentals with excellent percussion. The lyrics were a bit dull in places but the stunning music makes up for that. All in all this album has a nice mix of 3 or 4 styles of music. If you like different styles of music and great tunes I'd recommend this. But if you don't like reggae much, I'd steer clear, as despite varied style reggae really is the backbone of this record. One track is in fact a reworked cover version of a Bob Marley song. I'm looking forward to hearing the next album - from the first single 'Spiritualized' it sounds like he's taken a more guitar based sound.
