Beautiful Freak - Eels

Rating:
work of E, Eels frontman and songwriter, then Beautiful Freak is a good buy. The songs, while not consistently compellingly brilliant, all warrant attention, and the outstanding Novocaine For The Soul and Susan's House are almost good enough to warrant buying the record on their own. the replay value of Beautiful Freak, ...

Electro-shock Blues - Eels
by NeilG1 - written on 26/09/05 (Useful, 52 readings)
Rating:
Eels were formed in 1995 by Mark Oliver Everett, the man generally known as E. Their first album, Beautiful Freak met to critical and popular acclaim due to its charming blend of tongue in cheek angst and eccentric musicality. His follow up to this happy go lucky, Beck like US indie album, was Electro Shock Blues. A 16 track exploration of emotion and reaction to the death of his mother from cancer and his sister from suicide. The album begins with the track "Elizabeth on the Bathroom Floor", a song about his sister's suicide, told from her perspective. This is not a particularly cheerful album, it is however wonderfully ...

Electro-shock Blues - Eels
by 3rd Rock Satan - written on 01/08/01 (Very useful, 254 readings)
Rating:
The Eels debut album, Beautiful Freak, made them known(ish) on both sides of the Atlantic. The album was a mix of quirky tunes, such as ‘My Beloved Monster’ (on the Shrek soundtrack) and ‘Lucky Day In Hell’ (as used in Scream 2) and ‘Mental’. Mark Everett, more commonly known as ‘E’, could come up with some good stuff and drummer Butch and Tommy doing the bass made the Eels a good group to listen to if you wanted something alternative but not straying too far. Eels returned (minus Tommy) with their second, and bleakest album, in 1998. Songwriter E was having a turbulent personal life to say the least, his sister had ...
