This is one of the best double albums ever produced. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness opens with a soothing, lush piano piece which is relaxing and calming, but from then on, the Smashing Pumpkins proceed to burst your ear drums with loud, crashing and beautiful noise. "Tonight Tonight" is a lyrical, emotion stirring masterpiece and the likes of "Muzzle", "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" and "Zero" show the Pumpkins rocking at their very loudest. However, it's not all drums and distorted guitar and songs like "Galapagos" and "Take Me Down" are keen to point this out. The songs combine beautifully well and Billy Corgan is at the height of his power with wonderful lyrics combined with echoing screaming that energizes you completely. All this and I've only described the first half of the album!
The second CD is just as awe inspiring and fantastic. It is a little more creative and a little more daring but still holds many jewels which every Pumpkin fan will treasure. "Thirty Three" is a whirling dreaming song and "1979" contains a most wonderful catchy beat. "X.Y.U" is loud, distorted, crazy and scary but just adds a reminder that the Smashing Pumpkins still have that reckless streak. The end is as fantastic as its beginning with soothing lullabies like "Beautiful", "By Starlight" and "Goodnight and Farewell" which will rock you gently into a sleep-filled dreamland. This album is the Smashing Pumpkins at their very best and I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of alternative music
