Advantages: Awesome album, with some super heavy songs. A great direction for Ash!
Disadvantages: None
Ash have been around for some time and produced many good albums with great songs, Lose control, burn baby burn to name a couple. Their sound has always been very similar and is quite easily seena s tried and tested. And by the popularity of them from an early age it worked.
So when meltdown was released I headed out and bought it straight away. Now I was confronted by something very unusual when I played the cd for the first time.
The ash I once knew had evolved into a greater version of themselves. The album was a lot heavier and gave them a bit more kick to previous songs and albums, Wheeler and co certainly tried to impress with a new sound and my god it worked.
The 11 songs on the album are all very new and different, some of these songs are just brilliant the odd few being slightly under par.
Here is a quick summary of the songs on the album:
Meltdown - The first track of the album and wow. This track is the basis for the whole album and showcases just how the band have developed. Its heavy with great riffs through out. The band have changed and its definitely a good thing!
This Is my favourite song off the album because it so addictive and you can throw yourself about a bit to it!
If you really dislike this song then this album probably wont be for you.
Orpheus - This was the first single released off the album and its very addictive, played more or less everywhere to promote the album you will probably know it already. It has great vocals drumming and guitar. Again it's quite heavy, so far so good.
Evil eye - This song actually rekindles some of the old ash. It's not so heavy and is more pop rocky as opposed to the heaviness of the first few songs. I don't actually feel like this song fits this album too well. It does seem quite dated but then this works for ash so on that note it's kind of an exception.
Clones - This is very heavy, great vocals by wheeler in this song and awesome guitar riffs. Definitely one to listen to if you want to bounce around a bit! Its very catchy and if you like the album so far you going to love this!
Star crossed - This is a love song, as with all albums these days one has to be included. It's a slower ballad by Mr. wheeler and is very good. Its well executed and sounds really good. A bit of change from the hardness you will have gotten used to in the previous songs.
Out of the blue - This song reminds me straight away of burn baby burn, you will understand if you hear it. It starts off with some really catchy riffs, you will love this song. Very addictive, but seems a little lame after the previous tracks.
Renegade cavalcade - This song mixes very well some new and old ash together, which is executed brilliantly, super lyrics and great riffs keep it upbeat and edgy. Love this song. Much less heavy but still a great addition to the album none the less.
Detonator - This song immediately blows you away with its heavy start and great killer guitar lines mixed with super drum beats make for an excellent offering. The song also has a great solo too. The lyrics are just awesome and the whole song just pounds in your face. One of my favourite songs off the album. Mosh all you like to this one!
On a wave - This song has a great guitar rhythm throughout but its just not upto this album in terms of quality. It falters a little and could have been released on a previous album. Not really impressed.
Won't be saved - A song the reminds you of old ash once again, the song Oh yeah comes to mind with this one.
Vampire love - Not much of a track to be fair, I think it is the biggest let down on the album. I think its just me though as many people I know love it.
So overall the album is definitely new, Ash produce some amazing sounding heavy songs on this and they sound amazing. Well done to them really, a new sound which wanders away from the tried and tested. Superb album with some outstanding songs. A must buy.
Summary: Great album, a must buy!!
