Advantages: Festive
Disadvantages: This One's For The Children
What could be better than to curl up by the fire and stick on an entire CD Of New Kids On The Block at Christmas time? I should imagine many people do this and I shall be digging out my copy in the next few weeks in preparation for the upcoming festive period.
Who are they?
American teen targetted boy band, comprising Donie, Danny, Joe, Jordan and his brother Jon. Lead vocals are handled by Jordan and Donnie and Joe.
Highlights
The whole album is a treat of course, but if I had to single out some favourites then I would plump for their version of 'The Christmas Song' which is carried off with the right level of sentiment and charm. The performance does not manage to top Nat's original, but the guys do succeed in bringing it up to date with a polished production.
'This One's For The Children' is not in the slightest bit Christmassy and seems an odd choice for the album. The song reeks of charity and is just way too sickly. The whiney chorus will make your teeth grate and you will be glad when it comes to a close.
Head further into the CD for a subdued version of 'Little Drummer Boy.' Again, it does not come close to the original, but it will make the song more accessible for a younger audience. Better still is 'Funky Funky Xmas' which lives up to the title, adding some much needed festive cheer to proceedings with a bright and cheerful melody and a rousing party feeling, one to play when Uncle Ron is drunk and everyone has passed out under the tree.
The album has a delightful ten songs, just skip 'This One's For The Children' and its reprise and you might be pleasantly relieved. The cover artwork is also highly enjoyable with a very striking and robust pose from the group.
Summary: Pleasing
