An album with a dual personality? (Metallica - Metallica)

Advantages: Is easier to listen to than their heavier music and is an excellent introductory album for them.

Disadvantages: It heralded over a decade of "Softer Metallica" which has only been ended fully by Death Magnetic.

This self titled album by the legends of metal that are Metallica is the album that most people are introduced to Metallica on and is the album on which Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters (probably their most famous songs) were released. But is it really representative of Metallica's style of music or is it, as I so often hear it referred to as, a "softer album to drag people into the money machine that Metallica are and are seen to be ever since napster".

The response in my humble opinion is that it is both and neither; it is most certainly the least heavy album they had ever done, but it still has some heavy songs like "Wherever I may Roam" and "Of Wolf and Man" which are more representative of Metallica's style to that point while Enter and Nothing were much more indicative of where they were going with their next few albums. So it is certainly a bridge album which has got to be a large part of its success, and I do not think it is an accident that they released it when they did. Metallica are certainly shrewd business men but that should most definitely not be held against them. It was a t a time when metal was in danger of dying and they brought a LOT of focus back to it.

The album is a good one for people who are curious about what Metallica sound like and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone, and it is one of my 2 least favourite albums by Metallica.
