Advantages: Mass appeal, Range of styles

Disadvantages: None

Metallica started as outsiders in the world of rock, their music appealing only to a small minority. Making their music more and more complicated and finicky, their previous album 'And Justice For All' was well into prog rock territory. 'The Black Album' marks a big turning point, as they go back to traditional rock, bringing with it greater mass acceptance, and ultimately, their own commercial success.

All the tunes here sound great, and the lyrics also display a certain degree of maturity. The classic beat of tracks like 'Enter Sandman' is fantastic. The band also shows the greater range of styles it can handle, with a number of rock ballads making appearances, notably 'Nothing Else Matters', a full love song, and 'The Unforgiven', the soundtrack to the film of the same name.

No rock fan should be without this album. It was the start of Metallica's road to the forefront of rock culture, and rightly so.

I wouldn't have said And Justice... was prog (Aren't Yes prog :P) - it was like the previous albums, thrash. Just my opinion though :)
