many people try to define beck ito certain genre's but he changes from album to album and from song to song. This is what i see as the whole appeal of beck as he's not afraid to try anything. if you listen to mutations you would think that he was a relaxed country guitarist. if you listen to mellow gold you could think he's a rapper at times. both of these are great albums but on midnite vultures and odelay he doe swhat i think is his best work. the songs are funky, rocky, mellow and all ooze brilliance they are all brilliantly original and overall midnite vultures is just a great album overall with becks amazing vocals and the wide ... Beck's 5th album Midnite Vultures is surely a bit different from the usual Beck stuff. If you don't really know his old stuff just think of "Looser" which everyone knows and "Sexx laws" , first single from Midnite Vultures. There's quite a big gap, don't you think? It nearly seems that they're not even from the same artist. But, knowing Beck the genius of alternative music and his previous album "Mutations" which (as the name says itself) marks a period of change, we could have expected it. An album about sex? Maybe! With lots of important collaborations like Beth Orton, Midnite Vultures is ... Read the complete review

An outburst of lyrical expression with a touch of an ecclectic symbolism that merges into a hysteria of life. Thats what Beck would say about this album....probably. But then you never can tell with Beck. One minute he's spouting utter gibberish, the next he sounds like Stephen Hawkins on speed. (metaphorically of course....He doesnt have one of those computer voices or anything) But then maybe Beck has changed a little. Take "sexx laws" for example, which on the surface appears to be some surreal philosophical view on life, when actually its just a bloody good song. The fact that he harps on about his own sexual prowess is a little strange ... Read the complete review

This is the album which finally proves to me what Beck is about. First, let's set one thing straight about Midnight Vultures: this album does not represent a radical departure for Beck, either musically or emotionally. If anything, MV is a distillation of all that Beck has done before, a kind of over-produced greatest hits package wrapped around the pretense of a New Sound. It's Beck on 45. It's just the same vacuous material with which Beck has made a career, received absurdly fervent critical acclaim, and, until now at least, managed to dupe the music intelligentsia, who deserve to be duped in any case. Sure, Beck is trying his best to break the ... Read the complete review

Whatever you might describe previous Beck albums as - country-rock, acid-redneck? - Midnite Vultures is an obvious change of direction. This is Beck in near-disco mood, from the uptempo strident opening of 'Sexx Laws' to the distinctly Prince-like 'Debra'. Rather like Neil Hannon's Divine Comedy, Beck is sometimes too much of a smarty-pants, too keen to show his sly sense of humour. The result of this are parodic, clever songs like 'Get Real Paid' and 'Hollywood Freaks' which actually sound terrible. Far better are the playful lyrics and funky beats of 'Mixed Bizness' and 'Milk and Honey'. And for all the wild ... Read the complete review

11 - Bryan Adams
Some excellent rock ballads are present on this album. Powerful vocals throughout.
Bryan Adams has recorded better albums than this.
