Weller has been solo since 1992, and Modern Classics is a collection of his best hits from the four albums he has released since then, with three tracks from the first, and four from each of the rest. Oh, and "Brand New Start", which was not on any of them. This means that there is a great mixture of songs - from the excellent ballad "You Do Something To Me", to "Out of the Sinking" - the first track on the album, and a great way to start it. I just wish "Pink on White Walls" from 'Stanley Road' was on it - but then again, I have Stanley Road! There is usually one or two songs on most albums that I don't enjoy as much ... I am a very big Paul Weller fan, I even had his tunes playing instead of the wedding march when I got married!! I love all of his CD's as I do not see any of the songs as being weak which is the norm for most artists. Then in 1998, he released "Modern Classics" which is a collection of his music from 1991-1998, and proves what we all know deep down, that he is one of the best songwriters we have ever seen. Paul Weller has never been scared to put his heart on the line, with each single a fierce statement of intent honesty and pure music. Now they are all collected here to form this stunning album. One that everyone should own. Beginning with 'Out Of The Sinking', one which all football fans will recognise, this begins as it ends - full of power. Then comes 'Peacock Suit', with unusual lyrics and a great upbeat rhythm. 'Sunflower' is up next, with its soaring guitars, samples, and a superb intro. Fourth on the album is 'The Weaver', a more acoustic track with an effective use of instruments. 'Wild ... Read the complete review

Into The Mourning - All Soul's Day
Decent enough imitation of the Candlemass sound, with the atmosphere of a frozen cathedral.
Overlong and lacking in imagination. There's also a rubbish hidden song that destroys the mood.
Ravishing Beauty - Avec Tristesse
Mix of gothic metal and symphonic black metal that sounds distinctive.
Overly repetitive, too short and lacking coherence.
Static Tensions - Kylesa
Amazingly different style of metal
A few tracks sound quite similar towards the end
How To Be A Lady, Vol. 1 - Electrik Red
Lots of bangers
A couple of weaker tunes
Tuxicity - Richard Cheese & Lounge Against the Machine
Lots of tracks, excellent quality, extremly talented band
Only one style usedwhen compared to later albums, some tracks contain offensive lryics
Beauty From Pain 1.1 - Superchick
Energetic, upbeat, thought - provoking and just plain fun
Maybe a bit girly?
At The End Of Paths Taken - The Cowboy Junkies
A little more mainstream than previous efforts
They're not more widely known
Absolutely Free - The Mothers of Invention
Great songs - absolutely barking
None really - except maybe slightly chaotic on "Call any vegetable"!
Oh, Inverted World - The Shins
Not one bad track, couple of their best songs to date, new style and sound
It's quite a short album
The Ancient Realm - Aeveron
Successful combination of metal influences, with a crystal clear production job.
A little uneven and confused, and almost impossible to come by.
