Advantages: Paul Weller
Disadvantages: none
Paul Weller has never been scared to put his heart on the line, with each single a fierce statement of intent honesty and pure music. Now they are all collected here to form this stunning album. One that everyone should own. Beginning with 'Out Of The Sinking', one which all football fans will recognise, this begins as it ends - full of power. Then comes 'Peacock Suit', with unusual lyrics and a great upbeat rhythm. 'Sunflower' is up next, with its soaring guitars, samples, and a superb intro. Fourth on the album is 'The Weaver', a more acoustic track with an effective use of instruments. 'Wild Wood' follows with its simply beautiful acoustics and wonderful lyrics. It had to be on this album, as it is one of his best tracks. 'Above The Clouds' carries on the proceedings, with its tropical drum beat and soft sound. Next up is 'Uh Huh Oh Yeah', an upbeat track with great lyrics which is fun to listen to, it also has a good use of samples, this is a superb track. 'Brushed' follows, again using samples, but this is heavily sampled based compared to other tracks. The next track is the infamous 'The Changing Man', with its powerful lyrics and wonderful sampled sound. This is a pleasure to listen to, with its clever mix of everything Weller is famed for. This is followed by 'Friday Street', a slower track that is powerful, with a good use of brass and guitars. Up next is 'You Do Something To Me' (which is my favourite), the quiet and heart-breakingly wonderful song that is so full of emotions. 'Brand New Start' follows, this is more like his new stuff, and then 'Hung Up' is next, with an unusual yet good mix of chords, that makes it strange to listen to. 'Mermaids' is the next track, with its touching lyrics, mix of acoustic and electric guitars and a great use of strings.
39;Broken Stones' follows with its simple drum beat and uplifting spirit, and the new dawn of 'Into Tomorrow' finishes off this superb, essential collection. Despite the varying recording locations, dates, and personnel, the songs here sound like they were all bashed at one marathon all-night session. This greatest hits compilation is a wonderfull place to start if you have no other Paul Weller albums.....
