Moodring - Mya
Advantages: Good songs on here
Disadvantages: A few fillers towards the end
Mya Harrison is probably best known in the U.K for two reasons. Firstly she was the female vocal on the 90's hit 'Ghetto Superstar' and secondly, her biggest and most well known single in the UK is 'Case Of The Ex' which reached the Top 5 in 2001.
'Moodring' is Mya's third studio album and was released in 2003. The U.K version of this album features a staggering 19 tracks. Now that could be seen as either a good thing if they are decent hits, or bad if there are some fillers on there.
I have decided to review this album because it's one of those R&B albums that remains a hidden gem to the mainstream audiance. This album features some great R&B and Pop moments.
'My Love Is Like...Wo' - This was the first single from the album, to me, it's a very typical average R&B track, I was suprised this was chosen as the lead track compared to other songs on the album and am not suprised that this song didn't really make the album campaign take off. The chorus is very weak and repetitive. 6/10.
'Fallen' - This is more like it, the second and final single on the album. 'Fallen' has a more pop/R&B vibe to it and in 2003 this was very 'current' sounding. It's fast paced and perfect for radio. Sadly it failed to do well in America so remains one of Mya's lesser known (but more fantastic) pop songs 9/10.
'Why You Gotta Look So Good' - This was supposed to be a single from the album but was cancelled. A lot of the album reviews at the time mentioned this track quite a lot so to finally hear it was going to be interesting. It's more R&B based but honestly not really the standout on the album that the reviewers made it out to be. 8/10.
'Step' - This is a funky R&B track which borders on an anthemic chorus that builds up towards the end of the song. It's about telling a girl to 'step back' from your man. 8/10.
'Sophisticated Lady' - This is totally different to most of the other songs on the album, it's quite dancey but yet I wouldn't call it a dance track. The song is very 80's sounding. My favourite song so far. 9/10.
'No Sleep Tonight' - More R&B/Pop again. This is pretty good actually, it's about getting no sleep due to your man (go figure). Very American radio friendly R&B. 9/10.
'Anatomy 1on1' - This is a smooth, slow and sexy track. It's the kind of song you'd play when you want some private time with your partner. 9/10.
'Hurry Up' - This features someone called 'Gunz'. It opens with a typical Rap by this guy and then Mya bursts onto the song with some pretty good versus, however the 'chorus' really lets the song down. 6/10.
'Things Come And Go' - This features Sean Paul, and I have to say it's the standout on the album. It's the perfect summery pop song with a bit of a reggae vibe to it. This could have been huge if it had been released as a single (what were the record company thinking). 10/10.
'You' - Time for another ballad, this is probably one of the better ones on the album. It's nice, it's harmless, that's about it really, 9/10.
'After The Rain' - I'm not sure what to make of this song. It's average, quite poppy with a light hint of R&B but it doesn't really compare to the rest of the album. 6/10.
'Late' - This song is about 'monthly women's problems'. It's a bit of a 'whiney' song as her vocals really put me off the song. I'm not overly keen on this track 6/10.
'Whatever Bitch' - This is more like it. Mya has her attitude back. This is a funky, dancy, hating track. One of the standouts. 9/10.
'Taste This' - A very rude song. On the album to cause controversity no doubt. A bit of a filler song. 6/10.
'Take A Picture' - This was written by Pink and given to Mya. It's a mellow, watered down pop song. I find it dissapointing that Pink gave Mya such a poor song. 6/10.
'Free Falling' - The proper closing song on the album. It's very much like the previous track in the fact that it lacks something to make it stand out. 5/10.
The UK edition also includes three bonus songs 'Moodring', 'Real Compared to What' and 'Extacy'.
Overall it's not a bad album, and if Beyonce had released this everybody would be lapping it up. However, Mya hasn't had the same success and unfoturnely despite the gems on this album, not a lot of people have heard it.
Summary: Good effort
