Advantages: Some cracking tracks with humorous lyrics
Disadvantages: A few weak tracks still
Multi Kontra Culti vs Irony is the 2nd full album by Gogol Bordello and was released in 2006, Eugene Hutz's vocals are so mad that they end up sounding like The Proclaimers on acid. Starting the album off in style with When The Trickster Starts A-Pokin (Bordello kind of guy) and the spoken worded
As I walked into the bar
A man came up to me and said:
You know the older you will get
The more perverted you will get
which then sets off into an upbeat blast of punk and mostly russian lyrics
Occurance on the Border is an incredibly fun track of which the lyrics may or may not be of interest!
Hopping like a monkey on a holy toothpick
Is a rabbit on a pogo-gypsy stick
Give me no pain no great suffer
No bored striptease with dead snake
Give me skin that is dressed lively
Give it to me for kurav sake!
Then on to Haltura which is a bit too long and quiet for my liking, fusing ska with more balkan orientated ska and trumpets, not much is happening though, Hutz's vocals are similar to the lead vocalist of Leningrad's on this one (albeit quite politer)
Track 4 is Let's Get Radical, a sort of progressive dramatic ska and strings orientated song that is anti-foot tapping!
Sharmatch combines fast punk with classical music and humorous lyrics about being looked down on as a singer by a girlfriend's parents.
Future Kings starts with a dark feeling to it, in fact it sounds like Jim Morrison trashed in a bar in Ukraine slagging off people that study marketing and graphic design! Mice are prevelant again (a theme throughout the album as is Brighton for some reason), the song becomes a bit of a row towards the end.
Punk Rock Paranada is an upbeat punk track which speeds through some funny lyrics in at least 2 or 3 languages, the song is about a dead town.
Through the Roof and Underground is probably about as accesible as the band will ever be as the track is essentially a pop track but with good lyrics, a modern day version of the year 2525 if you like!
Baro Foro is a track predominently in Russian and a very dramatic one at that but it gets progressively better and more upbeat as the song goes on.
Hats off to Kolpakoff is an ode to singer Eugene Hutz's hero Russian gypsy guitarist Kolpakov, it's a short acoustic piece that gets faster and faster and features clapping.
Overall the album is a big improvement on Voi-La Intruder, it has a much cleaner sound to it and some cracking tracks, there are still a few weak points though and I don't believe it's as good as Underdog World Strike or Super Taranta.
